Selectively Tunable Synthesis of ?-Trifluoromethyl Ketones

Pan Zhou et al.

Summary: A cross-coupling reaction between aldehydes and alpha-trifluoromethyl alkyl bromides was successfully developed using a dual nickel/photoredox catalysis system. This reaction afforded alpha-trifluoromethyl ketones under mild conditions (visible light, ambient temperature, no strong base) with a wide range of substrates bearing various functional groups. The selectivity of the trifluoromethyl group on one side of the ketones can be modulated by different reagents, allowing for tunable access to these ketones.

Direct Photocatalyzed Hydrogen Atom Transfer (HAT) for Aliphatic C-H Bonds Elaboration

Luca Capaldo et al.

Summary: Direct photocatalyzed hydrogen atom transfer (d-HAT) is a preferred method for the synthesis of aliphatic C-H bonds in organic compounds. Selective C-H bond elaboration can be achieved by choosing suitable hydrogen abstractors and reaction additives. This review provides a comprehensive survey of the synthetic applications of photocatalyzed d-HAT.

Photocatalyzed Formal All-Carbon [3+2] Cycloaddition of Aromatic Aldehydes with Arylethynyl Silanes

Yujia Mao et al.

Summary: In this study, we present a photoinduced TBADT-catalyzed formal all-carbon [3+2] cycloaddition of aromatic aldehydes and arylethynyl silanes, which allows for the acyl C-H and ortho C-H activation of aromatic aldehydes, providing a new method for constructing the indanone scaffold under mild conditions. By selecting an appropriate silane as the precursor, the alpha-silyl group of the indanone products can be selectively retained or removed during the reaction. Preliminary mechanistic studies suggest that a 1,5-H shift plays a key role in the reaction mechanism.

Visible-Light-Catalyzed Tandem Radical Addition/1,5-Hydrogen Atom Transfer/Cyclization of 2-Alkynylarylethers with Sulfonyl Chlorides

Long Li et al.

Summary: A novel visible-light-catalyzed tandem radical addition/1,5-hydrogen atom transfer/cyclization cascade reaction was developed for the synthesis of sulfonylfunctionalized dihydrobenzofurans. This reaction relies on unique energy transfer and solvent-radical relay strategies, enabling the generation of sulfonyl radicals under photocatalyst-and additive-free conditions.

Three-component carboacylation of alkenes via cooperative nickelaphotoredox catalysis

Dingyi Wang et al.

Summary: Versatile three-component 1,2-carboacylations of alkenes were achieved using commercially available acyl chlorides, aldehydes, and alkanes, with the cooperative action of nickel and sodium decatungstate catalysis. This resulted in the formation of two vicinal C-C bonds. The direct functionalization of C(sp(2))/C(sp(3))-H bonds in a modular manner allowed for the rapid generation of structurally complex ketones. Additionally, a regioselective late-stage modification of natural products demonstrated the practical utility of this strategy, which offers high resource economy and a wide substrate scope.

Photocatalytic Visible-Light-Induced Nitrogen Insertion via Dual C(sp3)-H and C(sp2)-H Bond Functionalization: Access to Privileged Imidazole-based Scaffolds

Srilaxmi M. Patel et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a visible-light-mediated metal-free organic-dye-catalyzed dehydrogenative N-insertion for the synthesis of highly substituted imidazoles and dihydroisoquinoline-based imidazole derivatives via functionalization of C(sp(3))-H and C-(sp(2))-H bonds. The sustainable and convenient metal-free azidation/C-H aminative cyclization approach without stoichiometric oxidants involves a rare photoinduced iminyl radical as a key intermediate for the N insertion.

Visible-Light Decatungstate/Disulfide Dual Catalysis for the HydroFunctionalization of Styrenes

Alexis Prieto et al.

Summary: An efficient photoredox system based on decatungstate/disulfide catalysts was developed for the hydrofunctionalization of styrenes. The use of disulfide as a cocatalyst was crucial for enhancing reaction efficiency, allowing for the synthesis of a wide variety of useful building blocks and high-value molecules from simple starting materials, such as amides and unsymmetrical ketones.

Synthesis of Unnatural α-Amino Acids via Photoinduced Decatungstate-Catalyzed Giese Reactions of Aldehydes

Xinmou Wang et al.

Summary: The study introduces an efficient and general method for synthesizing gamma-carbonyl alpha-amino acids through photoinduced decatungstate-catalyzed Giese reactions of readily available aldehydes as radical precursors. The mild and robust method is compatible with a wide array of functional groups and has a broad substrate scope. The utility of the method was demonstrated by modifying several amino acid bearing drugs and natural products.

C-H Alkylation of Aldehydes by Merging TBADT Hydrogen Atom Transfer with Nickel Catalysis

Vetrivelan Murugesan et al.

Summary: The site-selective C-H functionalization using the dual Ni/photoredox system has been successfully employed for generating acyl radicals from aldehydes to produce ketones. Furthermore, a new cross-coupling reaction via C-N bond cleavage using nickel and TBADT catalyst has been developed, providing a broad spectrum of functional group-tolerant ketones.
