eDNA biomonitoring revealed the ecological effects of water diversion projects between Yangtze River and Tai Lake

Lijuan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study used environmental DNA metabarcoding to investigate the potential ecological impact of water diversion on the connected basins. The results showed that water diversion accelerated biotic homogenization between different waterbodies and affected the local community compositions of phytoplankton in Tai Lake.

Spatiotemporal heterogeneities and driving factors of water quality and trophic state of a typical urban shallow lake (Taihu, China)

Yonggui Wang et al.

Summary: This study assessed the spatiotemporal changes of water quality and eutrophication in Lake Taihu and its sub-lakes from 2015 to 2019. The results showed that Lake Taihu had poor water quality and maintained a light-eutropher state overall. The main contributors to the spatial heterogeneity in water quality were the massive nutrient loads caused by human activity and the geomorphological characteristic of the north closed bays. The study suggests that the restoration of water pollution and eutrophication in Lake Taihu should focus on nutrient reductions and those heavily polluted closed bays.

Response of cyanobacterial bloom risk to nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in large shallow lakes determined through geographical detector: A case study of Taihu Lake, China

Shan Li et al.

Summary: Understanding the sensitivity of chlorophyll response to nutrient concentrations is important for predicting cyanobacterial bloom risk. This study quantified the interaction effects of different forms of nitrogen and phosphorus on chlorophyll concentrations and proposed a refined response threshold range. The results showed that TP was the dominant factor influencing cyanobacterial blooms in Taihu Lake and should be prioritized for pollution load reduction.

Spatio-temporal variability of zooplankton and zoobenthos as the elements of integrated zoocenosis in a marine lake (Crimea, Black Sea): What is a general pattern

Elena Anufriieva et al.

Summary: The number of small lakes on Earth, especially marine small saline lakes, plays an important role in the environment, society, and economy. However, there is a lack of studies in these environments. In this study, the authors investigated the variability of zooplankton and zoobenthos in a small hypersaline lake in Crimea. The results showed significant fluctuations in animal composition and abundance, but no direct long-term changes were observed.

Effects of Light-Emitting Diode Illumination on Sediment Surface Biological Activities and Releases of Nutrients and Metals to Overlying Water in Eutrophic Lake Microcosms

Aimin Hao et al.

Summary: The effects of LED illumination and aeration on oxygen conditions and release of nutrients and metals from sediment were investigated. LED was found to effectively oxygenate the sediment and retain nutrients and metals in comparison to aeration.

Response of spatio-temporal changes in sediment phosphorus fractions to vegetation restoration in the degraded river-lake ecotone

Zhiwei Yan et al.

Summary: This study found that vegetation restoration significantly increased the sediment's capacity to tolerate phosphorus pollution in river-lake ecotones. The content of total phosphorus in sediments was highest in summer and autumn, while lower in spring and winter. Vegetation restoration affected the distribution and circulation of phosphorus in river and lake ecosystems, enhancing the ecological function of the river-lake ecotone.

Six decades of field observations reveal how anthropogenic pressure changes the coverage and community of submerged aquatic vegetation in a eutrophic lake

Baili Dong et al.

Summary: The study compiled long-term field observation data on submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV), water level, and water quality from Lake Taihu, and found that the composition and coverage of SAV in the lake have significantly declined in the past six decades. The increase in nutrient levels and water level, as well as the decrease in water clarity, were identified as the main factors driving these changes. Specifically, the decrease in species richness was well predicted by total nitrogen and the ratio of water clarity to water level, while the coverage of macrophytes was strongly related to water level. The study also revealed a threshold level of total nitrogen and the ratio of water clarity to water level that caused a shift to a eutrophic low-macrophyte dominated state. The findings emphasize the importance of improving water clarity in relation to water level for SAV recolonization.

The Prawn Palaemon adspersus in the Hypersaline Lake Moynaki (Crimea): Ecology, Long-Term Changes, and Prospects for Aquaculture

Vladimir Yakovenko et al.

Summary: This study examined the population of Palaemon adspersus in a hypersaline lake for the first time, revealing its higher halotolerance than previously thought. The study found a positive correlation between the prawn population and seagrass shoot density. Spring temperature increase was also linked to an increase in prawn numbers. Furthermore, the study discovered a negative correlation between spatial heterogeneity and prawn abundance. The decrease in Ruppia cover and prawn abundance in the lake was found to be significantly correlated.

The impact of recently excavated dredge pits on coastal hypoxia in the northern Gulf of Mexico shelf

Laura Thompson et al.

Summary: The study compared the oxygen levels and consumption rates between dredge pits and surrounding areas, revealing that dredge pits consistently exhibit hypoxic or near hypoxic conditions with higher oxygen consumption rates than the surrounding shelf. The findings suggest that sluggish water circulation and high sediment oxygen consumption rates in dredge pits lead to persistent low oxygen conditions, impacting the surrounding hypoxia.

Genomic Architecture of Rapid Parallel Adaptation to Fresh Water in a Wild Fish

Shao-Bing Zong et al.

Summary: Adaptive changes in Coilia nasus to freshwater were found to be associated with large chromosome inversions on LG6 and LG22, and genes within these inversions were enriched with metabolic, immunoregulatory functions. The study highlights the role of chromosomal inversions in rapid parallel ecological divergence and provides insights into the genomic basis of adaptation in novel habitats.
