Medication use in uncontrolled pediatric asthma: Results from the SysPharmPediA study

Amir Hossein Alizadeh Bahmani et al.

Summary: This multicountry, observational, case-control study aimed to compare treatment regimens, inhaler techniques, medication adherence, and other characteristics of controlled and uncontrolled pediatric asthma. The study found that children in higher treatment steps had a higher risk of uncontrolled asthma, and the risk was also associated with a larger change in lung function post and pre-salbutamol. However, adherence and inhaler techniques were not related to the risk of uncontrolled asthma. Other factors, such as environmental factors and biological profiles, may influence the risk of uncontrolled asthma in this population.

Difficult-to-Treat Asthma Management in School-Age Children

Andy Bush et al.

Summary: The World Health Organization categorizes severe asthma into three types and estimates the frequency of severe asthma in children. It is essential to carefully evaluate the diagnosis of asthma and utilize objective biomarkers to assess the pathophysiologic phenotypes of severe asthma. Children with difficult-to-treat asthma may require alternative treatment approaches, including asthma biologics. In addition to introducing new medications, advancements in digital health offer the opportunity for closer monitoring to improve treatment response and prevent severe asthma.

Risk factors for asthma attacks and poor control in children: a prospective observational study in UK primary care

David Lo et al.

Summary: This study identified risk factors for poor symptom control and asthma attacks in children, with poor symptom control at baseline predicting future poor control, higher FeNO levels and recent history of asthma attacks predicting future attacks, and factors like Asian ethnicity and decrease in AMR influencing the risk of future attacks. Routine assessment of these factors is recommended to identify children at increased risk of adverse asthma-related events.

Short-acting β2-agonist use and asthma exacerbations in Swedish children: A SABINA Junior study

Summary: The use of short-acting beta(2)-agonist (SABA) is associated with an increased risk of asthma exacerbation. In young children, high usage of SABA is linked to an elevated risk of asthma attacks.

Biologic Therapies in Pediatric Asthma

Evanthia P. Perikleous et al.

Summary: Childhood asthma is a common and complex chronic condition in children, and the management of severe asthma remains challenging. The use of biologic agents has shown promise in treating severe childhood asthma, but long-term effects are still unclear. Further research is needed to determine the most effective biologic agents and predictors of treatment response for pediatric patients.

Socioeconomic biases in asthma control and specialist referral of possible severe asthma

Kjell Erik Julius Hakansson et al.

Summary: The majority of patients with possible severe asthma are managed in primary care, even in settings with nationally available free access to specialist care. Referral of at-risk asthma patients differs across socioeconomic parameters, calling for initiatives to identify and actively refer these patients.

Real-World Assessment of Asthma Specialist Visits Among US Patients with Severe Asthma

Jessica F. Most et al.

Summary: According to recent data, less than half of U.S. patients with severe asthma receive specialist care, with the lowest rates observed in older patients and those with non-respiratory comorbidities. Specialist care was associated with a lower prevalence of asthma exacerbations and rescue inhaler use.
