IgA Nephropathy: Current Understanding and Perspectives on Pathogenesis and Targeted Treatment

Yating Du et al.

Summary: Immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN) is a common kidney disease with different features among individuals, particularly across races. It is caused by increased levels of galactose-deficient IgA1 and deposition of IgA-containing immune complexes in the kidneys. Recent evidence suggests the involvement of genes, environment, mucosal immunity, and the complement system. This review summarizes current knowledge and new findings in the prognosis, clinical trials, and translational research of IgAN.

Utilizing the MEST score for prognostic staging in IgA nephropathy

Yngvar Lunde Haaskjold et al.

Summary: This study aimed to establish a prognostic model for IgA nephropathy (IgAN) based on the MEST score and histopathologic features. The results showed that patients can be divided into risk classes based on their MEST scores and histopathologic data. Model B was found to be the most suitable for clinical practice.

Epidemiology and risk factors for progression in Chinese patients with IgA nephropathy

Yang Liu et al.

Summary: This retrospective study evaluated the epidemiology and risk factors for progression in Chinese patients with IgA nephropathy and found that male gender, mean arterial pressure, hematuria, serum creatinine, cholesterol, and other factors were independent risk factors for low eGFR in Chinese IgAN patients.

Epidemiology, baseline characteristics and risk of progression in the first South-Asian prospective longitudinal observational IgA nephropathy cohort

Suceena Alexander et al.

Summary: GRACE-IgANI is the first South Asian IgAN cohort with detailed follow-up and biosample collection; the cohort showed hypertension and proteinuria as common clinical presentations, with a lack of active glomerular lesions on kidney biopsy and a significant risk of progression based on risk prediction tools.

Grading system utilising the total score of Oxford classification for predicting renal prognosis in IgA nephropathy

Yoei Miyabe et al.

Summary: The study analyzed a new grading system based on the total MEST-C score in predicting renal prognosis for IgA nephropathy patients. The severity of clinical findings increased with higher O-grades, leading to a lower renal survival rate. The O-grade, mean arterial pressure, eGFR, proteinuria, and treatment were identified as independent factors predicting renal prognosis.
