Selective C-O Hydrogenolysis of Terminal C-OH Bond in 1,2-Diols over Rutile-Titania-Supported Iridium-Iron Catalysts

Ben Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, a regioselective catalyst was developed for the hydrogenolysis of 1,2-butanediol (1,2-BuD) to produce 2-butanol (2-BuOH) from biomass. The addition of iron to the catalyst improved both the activity and selectivity, and the reusability of the catalyst was enhanced through optimization of the preparation method. The catalyst showed high selectivity not only in the hydrogenolysis of 1,2-BuD, but also in the hydrogenolysis of other related alcohols.

Selective Hydrogenolysis of Erythritol over Ir-ReOx/Rutile-TiO2 Catalyst

Minyan Gu et al.

Summary: The study investigated partial hydrogenolysis of erythritol to 1,4-butanediol using Ir-ReOx/SiO2 and Ir-ReOx/rutile-TiO2 catalysts. The Ir-ReOx/TiO2 catalyst showed higher conversion rate and selectivity to 1,4-BuD than Ir-ReOx/SiO2, especially at low conversion levels, resulting in high 1,4-BuD productivity. The activity and selectivity of various triols, diols and mono-ols were compared between catalysts and substrates. Ir-ReOx/TiO2 catalyst exhibited higher activity in hydrogenolysis of C-OH bonds in 1,2- and 1,3-diols, while lower loading amounts of Ir on TiO2 decreased the activity and selectivity.

Summary: This study investigated the hydrodeoxygenation of erythritol, xylitol, and sorbitol over a Pt-WOx/SiO2 catalyst and found that high yields of 1,4-butanediol, pentanols, and other mono-alcohols can be selectively produced. The catalyst showed differences in activity towards mono-alcohols and polyols, and the Pt-WOx interfacial site was suggested to be the active site for the reactions.
