First principles study on stacking-dependent electronic structure of CrI3/α- In2Se3 heterostructures

Tianyu Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, we used the first principles method to investigate the influence of eight highly symmetric stacking orders on the structure, magnetism, and electronic structure in a CrI3/alpha-In2Se3 heterostructure. We found that the system energy and magnetism exhibit differences between normal and mirror stacking orders, which can be explained by the different stacking relationships of atomic layers and the effects of atomic structure deformations on the magnetic exchange interaction. Our research provides valuable insights into the material properties and practical applications of such ferromagnetic/ferroelectric heterostructures.

Zeeman Effect in Centrosymmetric Antiferromagnetic Semiconductors Controlled by an Electric Field

Hong Jian Zhao et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new paradigm for harnessing electronic spin in centrosymmetric antiferromagnets by controlling it with an electric field through the Zeeman spin splitting effect. By symmetry analysis, 21 centrosymmetric magnetic point groups that accommodate such an effect were identified, and two materials were predicted to be excellent candidates. The electronic spin magnetization associated with the splitting energy levels can be switched by reversing the electric field.

Van der Waals Multiferroic Tunnel Junctions

Yurong Su et al.

Summary: This study investigates the spin-dependent transport properties of van der Waals multiferroic tunnel junctions (MFTJs) composed of 2D ferromagnetic FemGeTe2 electrodes and 2D ferroelectric In2Se3 barrier layers. The proposed vdW MFTJs demonstrate multiple nonvolatile resistance states associated with the polarization orientation of the ferroelectric layer and magnetization alignment of the ferromagnetic layers, with a remarkably low resistance-area product making them promising for nonvolatile memory applications.

Ferroelectrically controlled topological magnetic phase in a Janus-magnet-based multiferroic heterostructure

Qirui Cui et al.

Summary: Electric control of topological magnetic phases in Janusmagnet-based multiferroic heterostructure has been demonstrated through first-principles calculations and atomistic spin model simulations. By manipulating ferroelectricity reversal and applying in-plane magnetic field, the loops of vortices and antivortices can be transformed into skyrmions and bimeron solitons, respectively. This research paves the way for achieving highly tunable topological magnetism in atomic-thickness heterostructures, which could be beneficial for nonvolatile data encoding and storage with low-energy consumption.
