Prediction Skill of GEFSv12 for Southwest Summer Monsoon Rainfall and Associated Extreme Rainfall Events on Extended Range Scale over India

M. M. Nageswararao et al.

Summary: The Indian summer monsoon rainfall (ISMR) and extreme rainfall (ER) events play a vital role in India's agricultural productivity and economy. Accurate forecasting of the monsoon and extreme rainfall is crucial for the country. This study evaluates the prediction skill of the Raw-GEFSv12 and QQ-GEFSv12 models for ISMR and ER events in India. The results show that while the ISMR patterns are similar in both models, Raw-GEFSv12 has a dry bias and overestimates low- to medium-intensity rainfall events compared to the Indian Monsoon Data Assimilation and Analysis (IMDAA). The prediction skill of Raw-GEFSv12 decreases with lead time, but calibration improves the prediction skill for all lead times.

The Extreme Positive Indian Ocean Dipole of 2019 and Associated Indian Summer Monsoon Rainfall Response

Satyaban B. Ratna et al.

Summary: The extremely positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) event in 2019 had a significant influence on the Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM) rainfall, particularly towards the end of the season. However, warm sea surface temperature anomalies in the central equatorial Pacific also played a role in affecting rainfall patterns over India.

Interplay Between Subseasonal Rainfall and Global Predictors in Modulating Interannual to Multidecadal Predictability of the ISMR

Subodh Kumar Saha et al.

Summary: Skillful prediction of the Indian Summer Monsoon Rainfall has been a challenge for over 100 years, primarily due to the chaotic nature of subseasonal variability. This study reveals that subseasonal variabilities significantly contribute to the seasonal ISMR, with their impact varying on interannual to multidecadal timescales. Improving the simulation of subseasonal variability, especially synoptic variability, is key to enhancing the forecast skill of the ISMR.

Inter-comparison of high-resolution satellite precipitation products over India during the summer monsoon season

Tirumani Siva Saikrishna et al.

Summary: The study evaluated high-resolution satellite precipitation products for Indian summer monsoon, finding that GPM showed remarkable capability in capturing seasonal mean rainfall over India, especially in monsoon dominated zones. HEM outperformed IMR in INSAT products, and GPM demonstrated skillfulness in different rainfall categories.

Understanding the development of systematic errors in the Asian summer monsoon

Gill M. Martin et al.

Summary: Despite the importance of monsoon rainfall to over half of the world's population, many climate models of the current generation struggle to capture major features of various monsoon systems. Errors in these models can develop quickly within the first few days and persist to climate timescales, with various modelling techniques and sensitivity experiments needed to understand their sources. Regional modelling and experiments shed light on the development and impact of errors in different monsoon regions.
