Heteroleptic and Homoleptic Iron(III) Complexes with a Tris(N-Heterocyclic Carbene) Borate Ligand: Synthesis, Characterization, and Catalytic Application

Yuna Sato et al.

Summary: Heteroleptic and homoleptic iron(III) complexes supported by a tris(N-heterocyclic carbene) borate ligand have been prepared and characterized. The strong electron-donating character of the tris (carbene) donor was revealed through various measurements and calculations. The catalytic activity of each complex in cyclohexane oxidation was evaluated and both complexes showed high catalytic activity and selectivity, with the homoleptic complex exhibiting more metal-based reactions.

Selective methane oxidation by molecular iron catalysts in aqueous medium

Hiroto Fujisaki et al.

Summary: Efficient oxidation of alkanes, especially methane, is essential for using natural gas as chemical feedstock. Current industrial processes use high-temperature and high-pressure steam reforming to generate a gas mixture that can be further converted into products like methanol. However, this study demonstrates a new strategy using N-heterocyclic carbene-ligated Fe-II complexes to capture hydrophobic methane substrate from an aqueous solution, oxidize it to hydrophilic methanol, and release it back into the solution. By increasing the size of the hydrophobic cavities, the effect can be enhanced, achieving a turnover number of 5.0 x 10(2) and a methanol selectivity of 83% during a 3-hour methane oxidation reaction.

Stacking of a Cofacially Stacked Iron Phthalocyanine Dimer on Graphite Achieved High Catalytic CH4 Oxidation Activity Comparable to That of pMMO

Yasuyuki Yamada et al.

Summary: A biomimetic catalyst based on a mu-nitrido-bridged iron phthalocyanine dimer stacked onto a graphite surface showed high catalytic methane oxidation activity, even at room temperature. The activity was almost 50 times higher than other molecule-based catalysts and comparable to certain natural enzymes in the presence of H2O2. The stacking of the catalyst onto graphite facilitated electron transfer from methane, leading to enhanced catalytic activity.

Mechanistic Study for the Reaction of B12 Complexes with m-Chloroperbenzoic Acid in Catalytic Alkane Oxidations

Jiamin Cheng et al.

Summary: The oxidation of alkanes with m-chloroperbenzoic acid (mCPBA) catalyzed by the B12 derivative, heptamethyl cobyrinate, was studied under various conditions. The reaction rate shows a first-order dependence on the catalyst and mCPBA concentrations, but is independent of the alkane concentration. The kinetic deuterium isotope effect suggests that substrate hydrogen atom abstraction is not the rate-determining step. The formation of a cobalt(III)acylperoxido complex and its role in the oxidation reaction were investigated through experimental and theoretical studies.

Hydroxylation of Unactivated C(sp3)-H Bonds with m-Chloroperbenzoic Acid Catalyzed by an Iron(III) Complex Supported by a Trianionic Planar Tetradentate Ligand

Yuma Morimoto et al.

Summary: The hydroxylation of cyclohexane was successfully achieved using an iron(III) complex supported by a trianionic planar tetradentate ligand, showing high turnover number and selectivity for alcohol production. The involvement of an iron(III) acyl peroxido complex as the reactive species was suggested by spectroscopic measurements, providing insight into the reaction mechanism.

Small-Molecule Tunnels in Metalloenzymes Viewed as Extensions of the Active Site

Rahul Banerjee et al.

Summary: Rigorous substrate selectivity in enzyme catalysis is attributed to the favorable process of substrate binding to the enzyme active site based on complementary physiochemical characteristics. However, this selectivity becomes more difficult to rationalize for diminutive molecules with too narrow a range of physical characteristics.

High catalytic methane oxidation activity of monocationic μ-nitrido-bridged iron phthalocyanine dimer with sixteen methyl groups

Yasuyuki Yamada et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the highly potent catalytic methane oxidation activity of a monocationic mu-nitrido-bridged iron phthalocyanine dimer with 16 peripheral methyl groups, achieving a total turnover number of 135 after 12 hours. The presence of peripheral electron-donating substituents significantly enhances the generation of a reactive high-valent iron-oxo species and hydrogen abstraction from methane.
