Life cycle assessment of biomedical waste management for reduced environmental impacts

Anurag Deepak et al.

Summary: This paper addresses the environmental burden of existing biomedical waste management in northern India and suggests constructive steps to achieve a less impactful environment through Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The study finds that an integrated system including incineration with energy recovery, autoclave-shredder, chemical disinfection, and Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) reduces the environmental burden compared to the present state. The paper suggests that LCA is a beneficial tool for decision-makers and managers to reduce environmental burden and develop a life cycle inventory database for developed economies.

Principal of environmental life cycle assessment for medical waste during COVID-19 outbreak to support sustainable development goals

Ashkan Nabavi-Pelesaraei et al.

Summary: The disposal of medical waste is crucial in preventing the spread of pandemics like COVID-19. With the increase in generation of medical waste, a structured evaluation is needed to quantify its potential environmental impacts and support sustainable development goals. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a practical approach for examining the environmental impacts of waste disposal processes. This research investigates the management of COVID-19 medical waste (CMW) through LCA, using the most up-to-date methodology (ReCiPe2016) to compute environmental damages. The study concludes that LCA is an effective method for evaluating the environmental burden of CMW management scenarios in critical conditions, supporting sustainable development goals.

Summary: By using converter ash as a catalyst, the gasification of medical plastic waste can be promoted, resulting in the production of hydrogen-rich syngas. The synergistic catalytic effect of Fe2O3 and CaO in the converter ash plays a significant role in generating hydrogen-rich syngas. Additionally, the converter ash has a catalytic effect on the formation of H-2, CO, and CH4. However, steam does not have a significant impact on the reaction mechanism during the CO2 gasification of medical plastic waste.
