Does Vehicle-2-X Radio Transmission Technology Need to Be Considered within Accident Analysis in the Future?

Maximilian Bauder et al.

Summary: This analysis investigates the need for differentiating Vehicle-to-X transmission technologies in accident analysis by creating Cooperative Intelligent Transportation System scenarios. The distances between vehicles are calculated prior to crashes in each scenario. The study compares Dedicated Short-Range Communication (IEEE 802.11p) and Cellular Vehicle-to-X communication (LTE-V2C PC5 Mode 4) to assess their reliable connection over relevant distances. Findings show that studies on freeways and rural roads are independent of transmission technology, while urban areas may have unreliable connections depending on traffic density.

Latency-aware C-ITS application for improving the road safety with CAM messages on the Smart Highway testbed

Vincent Charpentier et al.

Summary: The Cooperative Intelligent Transportation System (C-ITS) testbed, also known as the Smart Highway, is designed to facilitate research in the areas of distributed/edge computing and vehicular communications. It utilizes the Cooperative Awareness Basic Service to exchange Cooperative Awareness Messages (CAMs) between C-ITS entities, supporting vehicular safety and traffic efficiency applications. This paper investigates the impact of CAM message configuration on communication latency among vehicles, and performs practical experimentation using ITS-G5 and LTE-V2X systems on the Smart Highway testbed in Antwerp.

Assessing the impact of CAM messages in vehicular communications in real highway environments

Vincent Charpentier et al.

Summary: This paper presents a tool to support research on Cooperative Awareness Messages (CAMs) in Cooperative Intelligent Transportation Systems (C-ITS). The demo showcases how the size of CAMs carrying information about vehicles and surrounding infrastructure affects latency. The proposal is tested in a real life C-ITS testbed at the Smart Highway in Antwerp, Belgium.

Benchmarking the Cooperative Awareness Service at Application Layer with IEEE 802.11p and LTE-PC5 Mode-4

Charmae Franchesca Mendoza et al.

Summary: Vehicular communications have the potential to disrupt mobility services and enable the mass adoption of autonomous vehicles, with regulators allocating specific spectrum at 5.9 GHz band for ITS safety applications. Two main technologies, IEEE 802.11p and LTE-PC5 Mode-4, are currently positioned for commercial deployment, differing in their channel access mechanisms.
