Machine Learning Interatomic Potentials and Long-Range Physics

Dylan M. Anstine et al.

Summary: Advances in machine learned interatomic potentials (MLIPs) have allowed for the development of short-range models with near ab initio accuracy and reduced computational cost. However, incorporating long-range physical interactions into MLIP frameworks remains a challenge. Recent research has focused on including nonlocal electrostatic and dispersion interactions to improve model accuracy. This Perspective discusses key methodologies and models for addressing the contributions of nonlocal physics and chemistry in MLIPs.

High-Performing Atomic Electrocatalyst for Chlorine Evolution Reaction

Miran Ha et al.

Summary: Researchers have developed a high-quality catalyst for chlorine evolution reaction (ClER) with near 100% selectivity, long-term durability, significant chlorine production, and vastly improved mass activity compared to industrial electrodes. The catalyst, composed of single platinum atoms dispersed in N-doped graphene, also exhibits ultra-low overpotential at typical operating temperatures in the chlor-alkali industries, consistent with theoretical calculations.

Comprehensive Study of Oxygen Vacancies on the Catalytic Performance of ZnO for CO/H2 Activation Using Machine Learning- Accelerated First-Principles Simulations

Yulan Han et al.

Summary: In this study, the important roles of oxygen vacancies (OVs) on ZnO(1010) for CO and H2 activation were investigated using machine learning potentials, genetic algorithm-based optimization, and density functional theory validations. It was found that the presence of OVs resulted in surface reconstruction and created a Zn-3 cluster site, facilitating H2 and CO dissociation. The distribution of OVs on the surface also significantly affected the reaction rates.

Unraveling the Synergistic Effect of Re and Cs Promoters on Ethylene Epoxidation over Silver Catalysts with Machine Learning-Accelerated First-Principles Simulations

Benjamin W. J. Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, machine learning-accelerated first-principles simulations were used to elucidate the realistic catalyst models for the co-promotion of Re and Cs in ethylene epoxidation. The synergistic effects of the co-promotion were found to be twofold: Re increased the dispersion of Cs, maximizing its promotional effects, and the combination of electron-withdrawing Re and electron-donating Cs balanced charge transfer, maximizing ethylene oxide selectivity.

E(3)-equivariant graph neural networks for data-efficient and accurate interatomic potentials

Simon Batzner et al.

Summary: This paper introduces an E(3)-equivariant deep learning method for accelerating molecular dynamics simulations. The method shows state-of-the-art accuracy and remarkable sample efficiency in faithfully describing the dynamics of complex systems. The Neural Equivariant Interatomic Potentials (NequIP) approach employs E(3)-equivariant convolutions to interact with geometric tensors, resulting in a more information-rich and faithful representation of atomic environments. NequIP outperforms existing models with significantly fewer training data, challenging the commonly held belief about the necessity of massive training sets for deep neural networks.

Water structures on Pb(100) and (111) surface studied with the Interface force field

Oskar Cheong et al.

Summary: Classical molecular dynamics simulations were performed to compare water structures with ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. Good agreement was found between the two approaches at the same length and time scales. However, longer trajectories simulated with classical molecular dynamics led to the formation of different, more stable water structures, which were validated with ab initio calculations. This suggests the usefulness and advantage of classical molecular dynamics simulations for sampling more realistic time and length scales in simulations of metal-aqueous solution interfaces.
