Is Ocean Acidification Really a Threat to Marine Calcifiers? A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of 980+Studies Spanning Two Decades

Jonathan Y. S. Leung et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively evaluates the impact of ocean acidification on calcifiers, finding that many calcifiers have strong tolerance to future ocean acidification and their adaptability has been underestimated. It is suggested that future research should focus on how marine organisms survive in an ocean acidification environment.

Calcification response of reef corals to seasonal upwelling in the northern Arabian Sea (Masirah Island, Oman)

Philipp M. Spreter et al.

Summary: Porites calcification records from the northern Arabian Sea upwelling zone show compromised calcification rates during the upwelling season. Seasonal variations in skeletal density show no relationship with low seawater saturation states, but exceptionally low mean annual density implies permanent adjustment to the lowest saturation states. Variable responses of reef coral extension to nutrients may be critical to the maintenance of adequate carbonate accumulation rates in coral reefs under global change.

Global declines in coral reef calcium carbonate production under ocean acidification and warming

Christopher E. Cornwall et al.

Summary: Ocean warming and acidification pose a significant threat to the future growth of coral reefs, with projected declines in coral reef net carbonate production rates under different emission scenarios. Bleaching events leading to reduced coral cover are the main drivers of these declines, emphasizing the urgent need for stabilization of atmospheric CO2 emissions to ensure the functional roles of coral reefs are maintained.

Potential local adaptation of corals at acidified and warmed Nikko Bay, Palau

Haruko Kurihara et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the environmental conditions and benthic community structures in Nikko Bay, Palau, and found that despite significant changes in environmental conditions, coral calcification rate could still be maintained, indicating a strong local acclimatization and adaptation capacity of corals to environmental changes.
