Identification and characterization of forced degradation products of 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furaldehyde (5-HMF) by HPLC, LC-LTQ/Orbitrap and NMR studies

Yong Lu et al.

Summary: 5-Hydroxymethyl-2-furaldehyde (5-HMF) is an aldehyde compound generated from the dehydration of glucose and fructose. It is found in drugs, foods, cosmetics, and traditional Chinese medicine preparations with high sugar content. A comprehensive study was conducted to identify and characterize the degradation products (DPs) of 5-HMF under different degradation conditions. Five DPs were identified, including two novel DPs. Major DPs were isolated and characterized, and the degradation pathways and mechanisms were explained. In silico toxicity and metabolism evaluations suggested potential hepatotoxicity, mutagenicity, chromosome damage, and skin sensitization for both 5-HMF and its DPs. This research has implications for quality control and storage conditions of 5-HMF.

Detection of singlet oxygen by EPR: The instability of the nitroxyl radicals

Henrique F. V. Victoria et al.

Summary: The use of spin traps and redox probes coupled with electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) is an effective method in evaluating the efficiency of photosensitizers and photocatalysts in various processes involving reactive oxygen species. This study analyzed the kinetics of radical generated by the oxidation products of a specific redox probe (Hydroxy-TEMP) in the presence of water-soluble porphyrins under white light illumination. Factors such as probe concentration, pH, and porphyrin photostability were evaluated, and the mechanism of radical degradation and porphyrin photobleaching were investigated. The results provide valuable insights into the evaluation and interpretation of photosensitizer efficiency.

Photocatalytic Selective Oxidation of HMF Coupled with H2 Evolution on Flexible Ultrathin g-C3N4 Nanosheets with Enhanced N-H Interaction

Xiaolei Bao et al.

Summary: The flexible ultrathin graphitic carbon nitride (UCNT) is found to be an active and stable photocatalyst for the solar-driven selective oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) into 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) coupled with H-2 evolution. The UCNT exhibits high activity and selectivity, as well as good cycling stability.

Cellulose-Derived Carbon Dot-Guided Growth of ZnIn2S4 Nanosheets for Photocatalytic Oxidation of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural into 2,5-Diformylfuran

Jianhao Qiu et al.

Summary: Cellulose-derived carbon dot-directed growth of ZnIn2S4 was achieved through hydrothermal treatment of carboxylated cellulose followed by in situ growth of ZnIn2S4 nanosheets. The resultant CC/ZnIn2S4 demonstrated outstanding photocatalytic activity and can be used for visible-light catalytic reactions.

ZnIn2S4-Based Nanostructures in Artificial Photosynthesis: Insights into Photocatalytic Reduction toward Sustainable Energy Production

Yijie Ren et al.

Summary: Photocatalysis, as an attractive technology for addressing the energy crisis, has gained tremendous interest. Zinc indium sulfide (ZnIn2S4), a non-toxic and low-cost material, holds great potential for photocatalytic energy applications. However, its performance needs to be improved due to low charge-carrier transfer rate and ultrafast electron-hole recombination. This review summarizes the energy applications of ZnIn2S4-based nanocomposites and discusses various modification methods for enhancing their photocatalytic performance. The design strategies and important energy conversion applications are also highlighted.

Stabilizing indium sulfide for CO2 electroreduction to formate at high rate by zinc incorporation

Li-Ping Chi et al.

Summary: Recently developed solid-state catalysts can efficiently mediate the electroreduction of carbon dioxide to formate at high current densities. The introduction of zinc into indium sulfide can greatly enhance the stability and covalency of the catalyst, preventing the dissolution of active sites during high-rate electrolysis.
