Radioactive decontamination of metal surfaces using peelable films made from chitosan gels and chitosan/magnetite nanoparticle composites

Alberto A. Pujol Pozo et al.

Summary: In this study, the use of chitosan gels and chitosan/magnetite nanoparticle composites for the treatment of radioactive contamination on metallic surfaces was investigated. The effectiveness of the decontamination process was found to be dependent on the cleanliness of the metal surface and the type of radioisotope present.

Transformation of sewage sludge into activated carbon by molten salt synthesis for adsorption of CO2 and dyes

En Shi et al.

Summary: The transformation of sewage sludge into activated carbon by molten salt synthesis offers a promising solution for the advanced recycling of unwanted sewage sludges. The study demonstrates that the mass ratio of ZnCl2 to sludge significantly affects the textural properties and adsorption performance of the sludge-derived activated carbon, with a maximum specific surface area of 549.72 m(2)/g. The carbon utilization potential of the sludge-derived activated carbon is also found to be promising in adsorbing CO2 and methylene blue.

Strategies to achieve a carbon neutral society: a review

Lin Chen et al.

Summary: The increasing global industrialization and over-exploitation of fossil fuels have resulted in higher greenhouse gas emissions, leading to rising global temperatures and environmental issues. Achieving net-zero carbon emissions requires a comprehensive approach involving renewable energy transition, development of negative emissions technologies, implementation of carbon trading and carbon tax, as well as changes in dietary habits, low-carbon agriculture, and improving waste management. It is also crucial to build resilient buildings and cities, adopt decentralized energy systems, and electrify the transportation sector.

Surface decontamination of protective duplex oxide layers on stainless steel waste using deep eutectic solvents

Nayoung Kim et al.

Summary: The study found that deep eutectic solvents formed from choline chloride and p-toluenesulfonic acid monohydrate have excellent decontamination capabilities under different conditions, with hydration and agitation showing the best results. These solvents, which are biodegradable and eco-friendly, can significantly reduce the cost of decontamination applications and have the potential for metal recovery.

Study on the destruction process of cationic exchange resins treated by Li2CO3-Na2CO3-K2CO3 molten salt

Xue-Ze Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the mechanism and effects of molten salt oxidation (MSO) on spent resins, finding that MSO efficiently destroyed the sulfonic acid groups in the resins at 400 degrees Celsius for 2 hours, generating carbon residue and sulfur-related materials. Various analytical methods were used to demonstrate the effectiveness of this technology in treating sulfur-containing organic waste.
