Characterization of an Unknown Region Linked to the Glycoside Hydrolase Family 17 β-1,3-Glucanase of Vibrio vulnificus Reveals a Novel Glucan-Binding Domain

Yuya Kumagai et al.

Summary: In this study, the glycoside hydrolase family 17 beta-1,3-glucanase of Vibrio vulnificus (VvGH17) was characterized by preparing mutant enzymes. The C-terminus was found to be important for the enzyme's activity and substrate-binding ability, while the N-terminus contributed to the multimeric form of VvGH17. These findings provide insights into the structure and function of GH17 beta-1,3-glucanases.

Characterization of two 1,3-β-glucan-modifying enzymes from Penicillium sumatraense reveals new insights into 1,3-β-glucan metabolism of fungal saprotrophs

Valentina Scafati et al.

Summary: This study investigated the molecular mechanisms underlying the metabolism of 1,3-beta-glucan in fungal saprotrophs. The researchers identified G9376 as an exo-1,3-beta-glucanase that efficiently converted laminarin and 1,3-beta-glucan oligomers into glucose, and G7048 as a 1,3-beta-transglucanase with activity towards higher degree of polymerization 1,3-beta-glucan oligomers. The findings provide insights into how opportunistic fungi can metabolize substrates similar to their own cell wall without self-deleterious autohydrolysis.

Oligosaccharide is a promising natural preservative for improving postharvest preservation of fruit: A review

Santosh Kumar Bose et al.

Summary: The lack of proper postharvest management of fruits leads to economic losses, poverty, hunger, and malnutrition. To address postharvest losses, various technologies and chemical treatments are used globally, but some may pose risks to human health and the environment. Recently, oligosaccharides have gained attention for their health benefits and potential applications in agriculture, showing promising results in improving postharvest preservation of fruits by maintaining antioxidant activity and delaying cell wall degradation through hormone regulation. This review provides insights into the preservation effects of different oligosaccharides on fruits and offers future research directions for enhancing postharvest preservation.

Heterologous expression and characterization of a novel glycoside hydrolase family 55 β-1,3-glucanase, AcGluA, from Archangium sp. strain AC19

Yanxin Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel glycoside hydrolase family 55 beta-1,3-glucanase (AcGluA) from Archangium sp. strain AC19 was cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli, showing high activity on laminarin within a stable pH range and temperature. AcGluA hydrolyzed laminarin into a series of oligosaccharides and demonstrated significant biocontrol efficacy on rice seedlings against Magnaporthe oryzae. This study provides a new perspective for the development of green biopesticides.

Novel Anti-Fungal D-Laminaripentaose-Releasing Endo-β-1,3-glucanase with a RICIN-like Domain from Cellulosimicrobium funkei HY-13

Lu Bai et al.

Summary: Endo-beta-1,3-glucanase from Cellulosimicrobium funkei HY-13 was found to have high activity in degrading laminarin and displayed strong growth inhibition against Candida albicans. Deleting the RICIN domain in the enzyme resulted in a significant decrease in its ability to degrade beta-1,3-D-glucans. The findings suggest that this enzyme could be potentially utilized as a supplementary agent in the food and pharmaceutical industries due to its superior anti-fungal activity.
