Characterization of natural fractures in deep-marine shales: a case study of the Wufeng and Longmaxi shale in the Luzhou Block Sichuan Basin, China

Shasha Sun et al.

Summary: This study characterizes the microfracture morphology of deep-marine shale gas reservoirs using detailed shale drill core descriptions, 3D Computed Tomography scans, and Formation MicroScanner Image data acquisition. The results show a decrease in natural fracture density, length, and aperture with increasing burial depth and formation thickness. The study also identifies natural fracture density, host rock formation thickness, total organic carbon, and effective porosity as important factors for evaluating shale gas reservoirs.

Evaluation on carbon isotope fractionation and gas-in-place content based on pressure-holding coring technique

Wenbiao Li et al.

Summary: Gas-in-place (GIP) and gas-adsorbed ratio are crucial parameters for resource potential assessment and production strategy optimization. Traditional methods may have limitations in accurately evaluating GIP content, but the carbon isotope fractionation (CIF) model shows promise in achieving higher accuracy. The CIF model can also determine the gas-adsorbed ratio, which is important for understanding isotope fractionation during shale gas degassing.

Influence of Particle Size on the Low-Temperature Nitrogen Adsorption of Deep Shale in Southern Sichuan, China

Hongming Zhan et al.

Summary: Pore characteristics are crucial in studying shale reservoir properties and evaluating shale oil and gas resources. This research investigates the effect of shale particle size on the pore structure of deep shale using nitrogen adsorption experiments. The results show that the pore volume of deep shale is mainly distributed in the mesoporous range, and the particle size has a significant impact on pore volume. Additionally, different recommended particle sizes are provided for nitrogen adsorption experiments to enhance the accuracy of studying deep shale pore structure.

Quantitative Characterization and Controlling Factors of Shallow Shale Reservoir in Taiyang Anticline, Zhaotong Area, China

Kai Ma et al.

Summary: This study conducted a detailed characterization of pore characteristics in 15 shallow marine shale samples using various methods, and established a petrophysical model to calculate porosity and fracture. The results showed that the primary pore types in shallow marine shale are mesopores and micropores, and the enrichment of total organic carbon and brittle minerals contributes to the development of the pore-fracture system.

Predicting adsorbed gas capacity of deep shales under high temperature and pressure: Experiments and modeling

Shangwen Zhou et al.

Summary: This study conducted isothermal adsorption experiments and model building on shale samples from the Longmaxi Formation in China to predict the adsorbed gas content of deep shales under formation conditions. A temperature-dependent adsorption model based on the Langmuir equation was proposed and showed good agreement with experimental curves. The study found that under high temperature and pressure conditions, the downward trend of the excess adsorption curves slowed down, and temperature had little effect on excess adsorption capacity at certain pressures. Temperature played a major role in controlling the adsorbed gas content in deep shale, and the content ratio decreased with increasing depth.

Gas Adsorption and Controlling Factors of Shale: Review, Application, Comparison and Challenges

Asadullah Memon et al.

Summary: Several crucial factors in shale, such as kerogen swelling and pore shrinkage, kerogen maturity, gas type, and moisture content, greatly influence gas adsorption capacity. Accurately measuring the adsorbed and absorbed gases, selecting an optimized gas adsorption model, investigating shale controlling factors, and accurately measuring adsorbed and absorbed gases can enhance the accuracy of resource assessment and production performance predictions.

Controlling Factor Analysis of Microstructural Property and Storage Capacity of Deep Longmaxi Formation Shale in Sichuan Basin

Jianchao Cai et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the quantitative characterization of fluid storage and structural properties of deep Longmaxi Formation shale samples from southern Sichuan Basin. Experiments including nuclear magnetic resonance and nitrogen adsorption are conducted to analyze pore distribution complexity and pore surface irregularity, which are controlled by factors such as stratigraphic division and shale composition. The research findings suggest that the storage capacity and microstructural properties of deep shales are influenced by stratigraphic division and shale composition.

Borehole measurements of adsorbed gas content in coals using stimulated diffusion nuclear magnetic resonance

T. Keelan O'Neill et al.

Summary: A novel NMR measurement technique has been developed to measure the adsorbed gas concentration within coal seams, providing an accurate and non-invasive method to assess gas content. By optimizing the pulse sequence, the NMR measurement shows good agreement with traditional core canister desorption measurements, offering insights into both adsorbed and free gas concentrations. The technique enables the detection of free gas, aiding in understanding coal seam depressurization and its impact on development strategies.
