Effects of the Laschamps Excursion on Geomagnetic Cutoff Rigidities

Jiawei Gao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the geomagnetic cutoff rigidity during the Laschamps excursion using a high-resolution continuous geomagnetic field model. The results show that the exposure of Earth's atmosphere to energetic particles is high and independent of latitude when the geomagnetic field is weak and not dipole-dominated anymore.

Cosmogenic radionuclides reveal an extreme solar particle storm near a solar minimum 9125 years BP

Chiara I. Paleari et al.

Summary: During solar storms, the Sun releases a large amount of energetic particles that produce cosmogenic radionuclides. By analyzing Be-10 and Cl-36 data from ice cores in Greenland and Antarctica, we have identified one of the largest production peaks caused by an extreme SEP event that occurred around 7176 BCE. This event had a very hard energy spectrum and may have been up to 100 times larger than any SEP event in recorded history. Surprisingly, the event occurred during a solar minimum phase.

Recurrent ancient geomagnetic field anomalies shed light on future evolution of the South Atlantic Anomaly

Andreas Nilsson et al.

Summary: The strength of the Earth's magnetic field has rapidly decreased over the past two centuries, coinciding with the growth of the South Atlantic Anomaly, leading to speculation about a field reversal. Through indirect observations over the past 9,000 years, evidence of recurrent hemispherical field asymmetries related to millennial-scale variations in the dipole moment has been identified, suggesting potential ancient analogs.

Solar Activity of the Past 100 Years Inferred From 10Be in Ice Cores-Implications for Long-Term Solar Activity Reconstructions

Minjie Zheng et al.

Summary: Differences in Be-10 records from Greenland and Antarctica regarding past changes in solar activity have led to conflicting conclusions. Analyzing data from the NEEM, NGRIP, and Dye3 ice cores revealed a normalization issue with Dye3 data post-1958, impacting solar reconstructions. Exclusion of this data reduced differences in solar reconstructions between Greenland and Antarctica over the past 2,000 years. Additionally, Be-10 records from polar regions and sunspot numbers do not support claims of increased solar activity during the 1937-1950 period.

Eleven-year solar cycles over the last millennium revealed by radiocarbon in tree rings

Nicolas Brehm et al.

Summary: This study reconstructed a continuous, annually resolved atmospheric C-14 concentration record from tree rings covering almost the entire last millennium. It revealed the presence of the Schwabe cycle over the entire time range and identified some potentially harmful strong solar events. The record also provides a useful benchmark for radiocarbon dating accuracy.
