A simple predictor of interface orientation of fluids of disk-like anisotropic particles and its implications for organic semiconductors

Belinda J. Boehm et al.

Summary: A simple and general predictor of molecular orientation at solid and vapour interfaces of isotropic fluids of anisotropic particles has been identified through classical molecular dynamics simulations. Based on their shape and interaction anisotropy, this predictor shows remarkable universal scaling of the orientation at the interface. Guidelines for the rational design and processing of organic semiconductors to achieve a target orientation at a solid or vapour interface are proposed.

Chiral Liquid Crystal Microdroplets for Sensing Phospholipid Amphiphiles

Sepideh Norouzi et al.

Summary: Designing simple, sensitive, fast, and inexpensive readout devices for detecting biological molecules and biomarkers is crucial in early diagnosis and treatments. In this study, we investigated the interaction between chiral liquid crystals (CLC) and biomolecules at the liquid crystal (LC)-droplet interface. We found that the presence of 1,2-diauroyl-sn-glycero3-phosphatidylcholine (DLPC) phospholipid leads to a reconfiguration of the CLC molecules in the droplets, with low-chirality droplets undergoing the process three times faster than high-chirality ones. Spectrometry and image analysis showed that the change in the chiral droplets' Bragg reflection can be correlated with the CLC-DLPC interactions.

Director Distortion and Phase Modulation in Deformable Nematic and Smectic Liquid Crystal Spheroids

Sepideh Norouzi et al.

Summary: The study investigates the interplay between surface anchoring, spatially curved geometry, and the order associated with liquid crystals (LCs) in flexible and miniaturized technologies. Experimental methods and computational simulations were used to explore the effects of deformable curved boundaries on LC orientation in uniaxially and biaxially stretched droplets. The findings provide valuable insights for the design of LC-based flexible devices.

Self-shaping liquid crystal droplets by balancing bulk elasticity and interfacial tension

Karthik Peddireddy et al.

Summary: The method demonstrated in the study allows for the self-shaping of liquid crystal droplets into various anisotropic and three-dimensional superstructures, such as fibers, helices, and vesicles, with high universality and versatility. By controlling thermal stimuli and temperature conditions, different liquid crystal structures can be achieved, mimicking biological structures found in living systems.
