Production of Antibacterial Activity and Bone Cell Proliferation by Surface Engineering of Ga- or Mn-Doped Ceria-Coated Biomedical Titanium Alloy

Ayda Khosravanihaghighi et al.

Summary: This study provides a detailed interpretation of the role of Ga and Mn dopants, solid solubility mechanisms, charge compensation mechanisms, and antibacterial performance in CeO2 films. The results challenge the common assumption of the dominance of oxygen vacancies in ceria performance, showing that bioactivity is directly related to Ce3+ concentration. The antibacterial activity is influenced by the type, amount, and valence of the dopant, while cell proliferation is enhanced by doping at the lowest concentration.

Monomer Release from Dental Resins: The Current Status on Study Setup, Detection and Quantification for In Vitro Testing

Tristan Hampe et al.

Summary: Dental resins have been widely applied in dentistry, but they may release toxic substances in the oral environment, causing public concern. However, the heterogeneous study design in current research hinders effective biocompatibility testing. Therefore, a reliable experimental and analytical setup is necessary to assess patient exposure and health risks.

Towards the development of biostable dental resin systems-design criteria and constraints beyond ester-free chemistries

Zach Gouveia et al.

Summary: This review article summarizes the current research on dental resin-based restorative (RBR) materials, specifically focusing on emerging resin technologies. It provides researchers with design criteria for screening new RBR developments effectively. The article presents various developments in the field aimed at addressing the limitations of modern resin-based systems and proposes a design workflow for evaluating new RBR materials. However, limitations in physical and mechanical properties and curing kinetics of alternative resin chemistries have hindered their broad clinical adoption.

Anticancer therapeutic effect of cerium-based nanoparticles: known and unknown molecular mechanisms

Maria John Newton Amaldoss et al.

Summary: Cerium-based nanoparticles have potential applications in clinical therapy due to their antioxidant and prooxidant properties. However, the complete understanding of their therapeutic mechanisms, both ROS-dependent and ROS-independent, is still lacking. Factors such as pH, Ce dissolution, Ce3+/Ce4+ ratio, cellular H2O2 level, and the role of anions may all contribute to the therapeutic performance of cerium-based nanoparticles and require further investigation.

Molecular dynamics investigation of structural and mechanical properties of silica nanorod reinforced dental resin composites

Bei Li et al.

Summary: Molecular dynamics simulations were used to study the structural and mechanical properties of silica nanorod reinforced dental resin composites. The presence of silica nanorods caused polymer chain expansion, leading to higher stiffness in the resins. Volumetric hydrogen bonds and binding energy increased with loading content, while showing little effect on length. The mechanical enhancement by rod-like structures was more influenced by loading content rather than nanorod size.
