Metallaphotoredox: The Merger of Photoredox and Transition Metal Catalysis

Amy Y. Chan et al.

Summary: The merger of photoredox catalysis with transition metal catalysis, known as metallaphotoredox catalysis, has become an important part of synthetic methodology. It combines the bond formation capability of transition metal catalysis with the utility of photoinduced electron and energy transfer processes. Photocatalytic substrate activation allows the involvement of simple starting materials in metal-mediated bond-forming processes, while electron or energy transfer with organometallic intermediates provides a complementary activation mode to traditional catalytic platforms.

Copper-catalysed asymmetric reductive cross-coupling of prochiral alkenes

Wan Seok Yoon et al.

Summary: The authors developed a catalytic method to efficiently form multiple adjacent carbon stereocentres in a single step with good stereocontrol. This method utilizes a copper catalyst and diboron to achieve the reductive coupling reaction of various enynes, allowing for the highly diastereo- and enantioselective synthesis of organoboron derivatives with multiple adjacent stereocentres.

Enantioselective C-H bond functionalization of aromatic ketones with 1,6-enynes via photoredox/cobalt dual catalysis

Kakoli Maji et al.

Summary: An enantioselective ortho-C(sp(2))-H functionalization of ketones with 1,6-enynes is demonstrated using photoredox/cobalt dual catalysis. This method shows high yields, tolerance towards functional groups, and selectivity. Mechanistic studies reveal that the key steps involve visible-light mediated generation of low-valent cobalt complex, intramolecular cyclization, ortho-C-H bond insertion, and reductive elimination.

Highly Regio- and Enantioselective Reductive Coupling of Alkynes and Aldehydes via Photoredox Cobalt Dual Catalysis

Yan-Lin Li et al.

Summary: A highly regio- and enantioselective reductive coupling of alkynes and aldehydes has been developed under visible light photoredox dual catalysis, providing enantioenriched allylic alcohols with excellent selectivity control and broad substrate scope. This approach shows considerable advantages, making significant improvements to enantioselective alkyne-aldehyde reductive coupling reactions.
