Effect of the Partitioning of Diffuse and Direct APAR on GPP Estimation

Siyuan Chen et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a method based on the partitioning of diffuse and direct absorbed photosynthetically active radiation for more accurate estimation of half-hourly gross primary productivity (GPP). The method takes into consideration the influence of diffuse radiation and demonstrates a higher level of accuracy compared to total absorbed photosynthetically active radiation-based GPP estimations.

Improved estimation of global gross primary productivity during 1981-2020 using the optimized P model

Zhenyu Zhang et al.

Summary: Accurate estimation of terrestrial gross primary productivity (GPP) is crucial for studying carbon exchange between the atmosphere and biosphere. The recently developed P model shows better performance than traditional Light Use Efficiency (LUE) models. In this study, 5 water stress factors were integrated into the P model to improve accuracy. The resulting global GPP dataset, called PGPP, outperforms other widely-used GPP products.

Summary: In this study, we optimized the parameters of the Hi-GLASS GPP algorithm using the Markov chain Monte Carlo approach and FLUXNET data. By using high resolution Landsat data, we were able to improve the estimation of vegetation gross primary production (GPP) and observed a significant improvement in simulating GPP for different vegetation types.

A physiology-based Earth observation model indicates stagnation in the global gross primary production during recent decades

Torbern Tagesson et al.

Summary: Earth observation-based estimates of global gross primary production (GPP) are crucial for understanding the terrestrial biosphere's response to climate change and other human impacts. This study used an asymptotic light response function (LRF) to estimate GPP, showing better results at high spatiotemporal resolutions compared to conventional methods. The global terrestrial GPP budget was stable around 121.8 +/- 3.5 Pg C annually from 1982 to 2015, with the strongest variability observed in semi-arid regions and croplands in China and India.

Summary: This study analyzes the impact of forest management on climate change mitigation, showing that reduced harvesting levels can provide short-term climate benefits and even moderate reductions would yield substantial climate benefits. The findings highlight the importance of adjusting forest management strategies based on future substitution factors and forest growth for optimal climate outcomes.

Summary: Forest biomass and carbon monitoring are crucial for climate change mitigation. A cloud-based approach utilizing Sentinel-2 imagery and ecosystem modeling has been demonstrated to produce large area forest volume and primary production estimates accurately. This lays the foundation for further development of an operational large area forest monitoring system.

Modelling Daily Gross Primary Productivity with Sentinel-2 Data in the Nordic Region-Comparison with Data from MODIS

Zhanzhang Cai et al.

Summary: The study found that GPP estimation models based on Sentinel-2 and MODIS data are generally consistent and accurate at the Nordic regional scale. However, using higher spatial-resolution Sentinel-2 data did not improve model accuracy. Further analyses and tests are needed for improved GPP estimations from Sentinel-2 satellite data.

Upscaling Northern Peatland CO2 Fluxes Using Satellite Remote Sensing Data

Sofia Junttila et al.

Summary: Remote sensing methods offer a promising opportunity to monitor CO2 exchange in peatland ecosystems at large scales. The study developed empirical models for CO2 balance, GPP, and ER using satellite data and showed high agreement with field data for GPP and ER. Further research is needed to investigate sources of spatial and temporal variation in CO2 fluxes.

A modified two-leaf light use efficiency model for improving the simulation of GPP using a radiation scalar

Summary: The study introduces a modified TL-LUE model with a radiation scalar (RTL-LUE) to improve GPP simulation, showing better tracking of diurnal and seasonal variations compared to the TL-LUE model. The RTL-LUE model exhibits lower sensitivity to radiation and alleviates the overestimation issues associated with the TL-LUE model at noon and during growing seasons.

Forest floor fluxes drive differences in the carbon balance of contrasting boreal forest stands

Jinshu Chi et al.

Summary: The study reveals the important role of forest floor CO2 fluxes in regulating the boreal forest carbon balance, with significant differences in contributions to net CO2 sources between different forest stands. NFFE acts as the main driver for the differences in NEE between contrasting stands, highlighting the need for high spatio-temporal resolution data acquisition to improve predictions of global change impacts on forest carbon cycles.
