Influence of Molecular Weight on the Performance of Polyelectrolyte Multilayer Nanofiltration Membranes

Jurjen A. Regenspurg et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of molecular weight (Mw) on the performance of polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) membranes. The results show that Mw has different effects on the performance of different types of PEM membranes, especially for systems with higher polyelectrolyte (PE) mobility. Specifically, low-Mw PEM membranes exhibit the performance of a negatively charged separation layer, while high-Mw PEM membranes exhibit the performance of a positively charged separation layer. Additionally, low-Mw PEM membranes are denser than high-Mw PEM membranes. The pH stability of low-Mw PEM membranes is poorer, which may be attributed to their higher mobility.

A temperature-responsive release cellulose-based microcapsule loaded with chlorpyrifos for sustainable pest control

Douxin Xiao et al.

Summary: A temperature-responsive release microcapsule loaded with chlorpyrifos showed high pesticide-loading efficiency, adhesion on plant foliage, and protection against photodegradation. The controlled-release characteristics of the microcapsule could be adjusted based on temperature changes and the efficacy against pests was positively correlated with temperature-induced release rate changes. The acute toxicity of the microcapsule to zebrafish was significantly reduced compared to conventional pesticide formulations. These findings suggest that the microcapsule release system has great potential in developing effective and environmentally friendly pesticide formulations.

Growth Mechanism of Polymer Membranes Obtained by H-Bonding Across Immiscible Liquid Interfaces

Julien Dupre de Baubigny et al.

Summary: Complexation of polymers at liquid interfaces is a promising technique for producing printable and self-healing devices and membranes. This study investigates the spontaneous growth of H-bonded PPO-PMAA membranes at a liquid-liquid interface using two reflectometric methods. The results indicate that the membrane thickness grows with time in a manner similar to a diffusion-limited process, with faster growth observed as the PPO molar mass increases. The study provides insight into the microscopic structure of the membrane and paves the way for the rational design of self-assembled membranes with optimal properties.

pH-Responsive Capsule Polymer Particles Prepared by Interfacial Photo-Cross-Linking: Effect of the Alkyl Chain Length of the pH-Responsive Monomer

Yukiya Kitayama et al.

Summary: pH-responsive capsule polymer particles were prepared by interfacial photo-cross-linking with photo-reactive polymers possessing different pH-responsive monomer units of different alkyl chain lengths. The study showed successful regulation of the controlled release properties of these particles using pH-responsive monomers with different alkyl chain lengths.
