Diabetic ketoacidosis and COVID-19: what have we learned so far?

Caio Oliveira De Sa-Ferreira et al.

Summary: There is a clear correlation between COVID-19 and diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). SARS-CoV-2 infection can precipitate hyperglycemia and ketoacidosis in both diabetic and nondiabetic patients, leading to severe outcomes. DKA in COVID-19 patients may increase risk and worsen outcomes, emphasizing the need for rapid interventions to minimize complications and spreading.

Characterization of Bacterial and Fungal Infections in Hospitalized Patients With Coronavirus Disease 2019 and Factors Associated With Health Care-Associated Infections

Christine J. Kubin et al.

Summary: In this study, 3028 adult patients hospitalized with COVID-19 were evaluated, with 17% of them experiencing secondary infections and 12% of them classified as health care-associated infections (HAIs). Gram-negative bacteria and fungi were the most common pathogens causing HAIs, and antibiotic resistance increased with prolonged hospital stays. Intensive care unit stay, mechanical ventilation, and steroid use were identified as risk factors for HAIs.

Leukemoid Reaction in a Severe COVID-19 Patient

Diogo R. Sene et al.

Summary: This case report describes a 36-year-old woman with severe COVID-19 infection who had leukocytosis with left shift and toxic granulations. A presumptive diagnosis of leukemoid reaction secondary to COVID-19 infection was made, but confirmation could not be obtained due to the patient’s death. Further research is needed to evaluate the association between leukemoid reaction and severe COVID-19 infection.

Leukemoid Reaction in a Patient With Severe COVID-19 Infection

Kidist Tarekegn et al.

Summary: Leukemoid reaction is a rare clinical condition characterized by marked leukocytosis with predominantly mature neutrophils, commonly caused by severe infection, malignancies, intoxication, or severe hemorrhage. This condition was observed in a 64-year-old female with severe COVID-19 infection, and after excluding hematologic malignancy, she was diagnosed with leukemoid reaction.
