Carbonization of a Molybdenum Substrate Surface and Nanoparticles by a One-Step Method of Femtosecond Laser Ablation in a Hexane Solution

Yoshiki Tanaka et al.

Summary: In this study, a one-step method for fabricating molybdenum monocarbide (MoC) nanoparticles and surfaces with laser-induced periodic surface structure (LIPSS) was developed. The spherical nanoparticles with an average diameter of 61 nm were observed, and they were found to be nanosized single crystals with a carbon shell on the surface. The results of X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy confirmed the formation of MoC and amorphous carbon structures. This simple synthesis method may open up new possibilities for MoC-based devices and nanomaterials in catalytic, photonic, and tribological fields.

High-efficiency-and-quality nanostructuring of molybdenum surfaces by orthogonally polarized blue femtosecond lasers

Bo Zhao et al.

Summary: Femtosecond laser-induced periodic surface structures, achieved through double temporally delayed blue femtosecond lasers, offer a new prospect for high precision manufacture. The homogeneous large-area nanolithography on molybdenum surface shows improved structure uniformity and quality, making it suitable for applications in nanooptics.

Irregular LIPSS produced on metals by single linearly polarized femtosecond laser

Dongshi Zhang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the generation of supra-wavelength periodic surface structures (SWPSS) on Sn and triangular and rhombic laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) on W, Mo, Ta, and Nb using a single linearly polarized femtosecond laser. The SWPSS patches possess independent orientations, breaking the traditional rules. The maximal period reported for SWPSS is 25 μm, while the formation of LIPSS depends on material composition. The study also characterizes the reflectance and iridescence of the prepared SWPSS and LIPSS.

Transformation from nano-ripples to nano-triangle arrays and their orientation control on titanium surfaces by using orthogonally polarized femtosecond laser double-pulse sequences

Wei Liu et al.

Summary: One-dimensional and two-dimensional laser-induced periodic structures, including nano-ripples and nano-triangle arrays, are fabricated on titanium surfaces using orthogonally polarized and equal-energy femtosecond laser double-pulse sequences. The formation of these structures is dependent on the laser fluence, time delay, and scanning speed, rather than the laser polarization.

Birefringent response of graphene oxide film structurized via femtosecond laser

Tingting Zou et al.

Summary: In this study, artificial in-plane birefringence properties were successfully achieved on a graphene oxide film using a novel femtosecond laser lithography method. The obtained sample showed evident optical birefringence and anisotropic photoresponse in the visible range, which can be modulated by the structural morphology or degree of oxide reduction. This technique has great advantages for fabricating integrated in-plane polarization-dependent devices and may help solve various problems in this field.

Effects of supra-wavelength periodic structures on the formation of 1D/2D periodic nanostructures by femtosecond lasers

Manshi Wang et al.

Summary: Femtosecond laser-induced periodic surface structure (fs-LIPSS) is a high-throughput parallel laser patterning method used to fabricate various sub-micrometer scale surface structures. The paper explores the effects of single and double femtosecond laser beams on the fabrication of nanostructures, finding that supra-wavelength structures hinder the regularity and deep sub-wavelength ripples. Additionally, the appearance of supra-wavelength structures prevents the fabrication of certain 2D nanostructures.

Femtosecond laser induced simultaneous functional nanomaterial synthesis, in situ deposition and hierarchical LIPSS nanostructuring for tunable antireflectance and iridescence applications

Ruijie Liu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the development of tunable iridescent antireflective surfaces through femtosecond laser ablation of tungsten and molybdenum, synthesizing functional metal-oxide nanomaterials, in situ deposition and hierarchical nanostructuring of LIPSSs. Adjusting the scanning interval allows modulation of particle deposition rates on the surface, leading to the formation of better ultrabroadband antireflective surfaces with less pronounced iridescence. Loose deposition of MoOx and WOx particles outperforms tight deposition for ultrabroadband antireflective applications, enhancing antireflectance performances significantly.

Direct fabrication of rotational femtosecond laser-induced periodic surface structure on a tilted stainless steel surface

Yi-Hsien Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) on a tilted stainless steel surface using both p and s-polarized laser beams. Different types of LIPSS were compared and the fabrication of one-dimensional rotational low spatial frequency LIPSS on a tilted surface was demonstrated. Additionally, changing the laser scanning strategy resulted in lightning-like structures and two-dimensional structures on the tilted surface.

Super-regular femtosecond laser nanolithography based on dual-interface plasmons coupling

Hongbo Xie et al.

Summary: Advances in femtosecond laser-material interaction have enabled the development of a hybrid plasmon lithography technique, where near-infrared femtosecond laser pulses are used to create nanograting structures on Si coated with thin Cr films. The unique structures are attributed to the excitation of dual-interface coupled plasmons in the thin metal layer, leading to deep-subwavelength patterns and high aspect ratio grooves. By modifying the structures with wet etching, the resulting V-profiles exhibit near omnidirectional antireflection in the visible range, showing potential for advanced photonic devices.
