Toward developing Ti alloys with high fatigue crack growth resistance by additive manufacturing

F. Wang et al.

Summary: The fatigue crack growth behavior of TA19 alloy and its heat-treated samples was investigated. The crack growth resistance in different regimes was determined by analyzing the interaction between the fatigue crack and alpha/beta phase interface, columnar prior-beta grain boundary, and colony boundary. The results showed that the crack propagation threshold and resistance increased with the increase of lamellar alpha(p) phase and colony width in the near-threshold regime. In the Paris regime, the fatigue cracking path could be deflected at colony boundaries or columnar prior-beta grain boundaries, and the deflection angle influenced the crack growth rate.

Investigation of the O phase in the Ti-22Al-25Nb alloy during deformation at elevated temperatures: Plastic deformation mechanism and effect on B2 grain boundary embrittlement

Bin Shao et al.

Summary: The Ti-22Al-25Nb alloy, with a complex microstructure, is a new lightweight high-temperature structural material. The study investigated the mechanical properties of three different microstructures of the alloy at increasing temperatures. The O + alpha 2 + B2 microstructure showed the best overall mechanical properties, and the softening of the O phase at elevated temperatures was due to basal slip and twinning. Grain boundary embrittlement was observed at higher temperatures, which could be alleviated by the precipitation of O or alpha 2 phases.

Effect of static annealing on superplastic behavior of a friction stir welded Ti-6Al-4V alloy joint and microstructural evolution during deformation

C. L. Jia et al.

Summary: Structural integration is a critical developing direction in the aerospace field. A combination process of friction stir welding, static annealing, and superplastic deformation was proposed to eliminate strain localization during the fabrication of large-scale complex components. The study showed that a fully fine lamellar structure obtained through friction stir welding and the annealing process allowed for uniform superplastic deformation in the entire joint. The microstructures in the base material and the nugget zone tended to become similar equiaxed structures after deformation.

Enhanced tensile properties and intersecting nanotwins formation mechanism of Ti44Al48Nb8 alloy via electromagnetic levitation processing

C. Liang et al.

Summary: By combining the electromagnetic levitation method with materials processing techniques, bulk Ti44Al48Nb8 alloy samples with different shapes were prepared and systematically investigated for their microstructure evolution, tensile properties, and deformation behavior. Three types of intersecting nanotwins were observed under highly undercooled state, and samples processed by copper mold casting showed improved tensile properties due to refined microstructure and the formation of intersecting nanotwins.

Composition and temperature dependence of α2 phase decomposition in high Nb-containing lamellar γ-TiAl alloys: Experiments and first-principles calculations

Cheng-ren Dai et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the decomposition process of the alpha(2) phase into the nano-sized orthorhombic (O) phase and blocky omega(0) phase in high Nb-containing γ-TiAl alloys at different temperatures. The study reveals that the transformation of O phase is controlled by Nb diffusion, while the formation of omega(0) phase is also related to Nb element. The pseudo-binary phase diagram accurately predicts the phase transformations in the alloys, providing insights for designing high Nb-containing γ-TiAl alloys.

A comparison of field assisted hot pressing and hot isostatic pressing for gas atomized Ti-22Al-26Nb(at.%) and Ti-22Al-26Nb-5B(at.%) powders

C. J. Boehlert et al.

Summary: Ti-22Al-26Nb and Ti-22Al-26Nb-5B compacts were processed using field assisted hot pressing (FAHP), with differences in processing temperatures and times resulting in varying microstructures. Higher processing temperatures led to fewer pores and three-phase microstructures, while longer processing times resulted in microstructural coarsening. Comparisons were made with compacts consolidated using hot isostatic pressing (HIP), showing finer grain sizes in the B-containing compacts. Compositional analysis suggested the presence of a B27 orthorhombic structure with B2TiNb stoichiometry in the Ti-22Al-26Nb HIP compact.Overall, FAHP was shown to be a viable powder metallurgy processing technique for Ti2AlNb-based intermetallic alloys.
