Ionized Magnesium: Interpretation and Interest in Atrial Fibrillation

Jean-Baptiste Bouillon-Minois et al.

Summary: The study establishes the reference values for ionized magnesium (iMg) and finds a strong correlation between plasmatic magnesium (pMg) and iMg. The interpretation of iMg is not influenced by pH and albumin variations. The incidencce of ionized hypomagnesemia among de novo atrial fibrillation patients is 8.5%.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed the clinical and biochemical characteristics as well as health outcomes of patients with hypomagnesemia admitted to an Australian hospital. The results showed that hypomagnesemia was common in hospitalized patients and undertreated, and it was associated with poor health outcomes.

High-Normal Serum Magnesium and Hypermagnesemia Are Associated With Increased 30-Day In-Hospital Mortality: A Retrospective Cohort Study

Liao Tan et al.

Summary: This study found that serum magnesium levels upon admission are associated with 30-day in-hospital mortality in critically ill patients with acute myocardial infarction. Higher normal serum magnesium and hypermagnesemia may serve as useful and easier predictors for mortality in this patient population.

High-magnesium exposure to bullfrog heart causes ST segment elevation

Itsuro Kazama

Summary: Hypermagnesemia, often seen in elderly individuals or those with renal insufficiency, can lead to changes in the ST segments and T waves on the electrocardiogram. Exposure of bullfrog hearts to high magnesium solutions reproduced significant ST segment changes observed in patients with severe hypermagnesemia, which could be quickly reversed by pharmacological stimulation of Na+/K+-ATPase activity with insulin.
