Low-dimensional representation of monthly electricity demand profiles

Joaquin Luque et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on reducing the dimensionality of electricity demand profiles using knowledge-based and data-driven dimensionality reduction techniques. The results demonstrate that autoencoders outperform other techniques, achieving lower errors in the reduction process and preserving distances between profiles in low-dimensional spaces with a high correlation to distances in high-dimensional space.

SimSES: A holistic simulation framework for modeling and analyzing stationary energy storage systems

Marc Moeller et al.

Summary: The increasing integration of intermittent renewable energy sources into electricity grids presents technical challenges. Stationary energy storage systems offer an cost-effective and efficient solution for accommodating renewable energy sources. However, challenges related to lifetime, efficiency, and returns need to be addressed before investing in energy storage systems. SimSES, a holistic simulation framework specialized in evaluating energy storage technologies technically and economically, is introduced as a tool to address these challenges. The framework covers various system components and storage technologies, and offers in-depth knowledge and analysis for expert users. Two use cases demonstrated the capabilities of SimSES in peak shaving and frequency containment reserve applications, showing the benefits of hybrid energy storage systems and cascaded converter approaches, respectively.

Machine-Learning Assisted Identification of Accurate Battery Lifetime Models with Uncertainty

Paul Gasper et al.

Summary: In this study, a machine-learning assisted model identification method is used to fit battery aging data, resulting in a model with approximately half the mean absolute error of a human expert model. The accuracy of the model is validated by comparing predictions to actual test results through conversion to a state-equation form. The results of this study demonstrate that the use of the new model identification method reduces uncertainty in life prediction and enables more confident estimates of energy storage system lifetime.

Monthly Electricity Demand Patterns and Their Relationship With the Economic Sector and Geographic Location

Joaquin Luque et al.

Summary: This study analyzed electricity demand data from over 27 million users in Spain over a period of 3 years, and found that information on economic activity and geographic location of clients is useful in determining demand profiles. Profile quality metrics showed high prediction accuracy, with demand profiles having a mean dispersion of 10% and a confidence interval of +/- 17%. The study demonstrates how customer demand profiles can help improve marketing decision-making for electricity retailers.
