Advanced-stage tongue squamous cell carcinoma: a machine learning model for risk stratification and treatment planning

Rasheed Omobolaji Alabi et al.

Summary: The study aims to develop a machine learning model for stratifying advanced-stage tongue squamous cell carcinoma patients based on the likelihood of overall survival. The study compared the survival outcome of patients who received different treatments and found that patients who received surgery combined with postoperative radiotherapy had better overall survival.

Development of a tongue image-based machine learning tool for the diagnosis of gastric cancer: a prospective multicentre clinical cohort study

Li Yuan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the value of tongue images and the tongue coating microbiome in the diagnosis of gastric cancer. Tongue images and tongue coating samples were collected from gastric cancer patients and non-gastric cancer participants, and artificial intelligence deep learning models were used to evaluate their diagnostic value. The results showed that both tongue images and the tongue coating microbiome can be used as diagnostic tools for gastric cancer, with high AUC values. Furthermore, a prospective multicenter clinical study confirmed the superior diagnostic performance of tongue images compared to blood biomarkers.

Optical Imaging in the Diagnosis of OPMDs Malignant Transformation

Y. Xu et al.

Summary: Oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs) are a group of oral lesions that have a variable risk of transforming into oral cancer. Traditional oral examinations may miss early malignant lesions, but optical techniques offer noninvasive methods for detecting these changes. This article provides a comprehensive review of various optical imaging methods used in the diagnosis of OPMDs, discussing their advantages, limitations, and future challenges.

Deep learning model for tongue cancer diagnosis using endoscopic images

Jaesung Heo et al.

Summary: In this study, a deep learning model was developed to identify patients with tongue cancer using validated oral endoscopic images. The model achieved acceptable performance in tongue cancer diagnosis, with a mean AUROC of 0.845 and a mean AUPRC of 0.892. The best performing model was DenseNet169, with an AUROC of 0.895 and an AUPRC of 0.918.

Vitamin B12 deficiency may play an etiological role in atrophic glossitis and its grading: A clinical case-control study

Guan-Ying Chen et al.

Summary: There is a significant association between atrophic glossitis and hematinic deficiencies, especially iron, folate, and vitamin B12 deficiency. The occurrence of hematinic deficiencies and anemia varies according to gender and age. Vitamin B12 deficiency and anemia are correlated with the severity of glossitis.

Automated feature detection in dental periapical radiographs by using deep learning

Hassan Aqeel Khan et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate automated feature detection, segmentation, and quantification in periapical radiographs using deep learning techniques. Results showed that among existing architectures, U-Net and its variants delivered the best performance, with interradicular radiolucencies being the most challenging to segment.

Deep learning enables discovery of highly potent anti-osteoporosis natural products

Zhihong Liu et al.

Summary: The pre-trained self-attentive message passing neural network (P-SAMPNN) model was developed based on anti-osteoclastogenesis dataset for virtual screening. The model outperformed other baseline models and resulted in the identification of two nanomolar-level inhibitors against osteoclastogenesis with a new scaffold. Subsequent studies showed that these compounds significantly suppressed the expression of specific genes.

Automated Detection and Classification of Oral Lesions Using Deep Learning to Detect Oral Potentially Malignant Disorders

Gizem Tanriver et al.

Summary: Oral cancer is the most common type of head and neck cancer worldwide, with early detection leading to high survival rates. However, lack of public awareness and delays in referrals contribute to late-stage diagnoses. This study explores the use of deep learning and computer vision techniques for automated detection and classification of oral potentially malignant disorders, offering a low-cost and non-invasive tool to improve screening processes and detection outcomes.
