Biological saccharification coupled with anaerobic digestion using corn straw for sustainable methane production

Chengjiao Xu et al.

Summary: This study used accumulated fermentable sugars from biosaccharified corn straw to generate methane through anaerobic digestion (AD). It was found that biosaccharification pretreatment expanded corn straw (BECS) treated with Clostridium thermocellum XF811 accumulated reducing sugars with a yield of 94.9 mg/g. The BECS used for AD converted into a high methane yield (7436 mL), which was 49.3% higher than expanded corn straw (ECS). High-throughput microbial analysis revealed the significant contribution of Methanoculleus and Methanobacterium to the high methane yield. Industrial experiments demonstrated a 13.2% increase in methane production from BECS compared to ECS. Biosaccharification pretreatment accelerated ECS destruction and accumulated sugars, thereby increasing methane yields. This study provides a strategy for producing clean energy from lignocellulosic biomass.

Microbial cooperation promotes humification to reduce antibiotic resistance genes abundance in food waste composting

Yuxiang Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the fate of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in a full-scale food waste facility. The results showed that microbial networks could be divided into two groups based on the changes in ARGs, namely the ARGs increasing group and the ARGs decreasing group. The difference between the two groups suggested that the variation in ARGs over time was caused by a switch between microbial competition and cooperation. Additionally, the study found that mature compost could reduce the risk of ARGs.
