Insights into the Active Acid Sites for Isosorbide Synthesis from Renewable Sorbitol and Cellulose on Solid Acid Catalysts

Tianyin Deng et al.

Summary: The effects of solid acids on the dehydration of sorbitol were studied, and H-ZSM-5 zeolites were found to exhibit superior selectivities to isosorbide. The formation of 3,6-sorbitan intermediate in H-ZSM-5 was more favorable for the dehydration to isosorbide compared to 1,4-sorbitan.

Recyclable Cu Salt-Derived Bronsted Acids for Hydrolytic Hydrogenation of Cellulose on Ru Catalyst

Yue Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, we developed a novel and efficient approach for hydrolyzing cellulose using recyclable H3PO4 and H2SO4 generated via the reduction of insoluble Cu salts. The in situ formed acids catalyzed the conversion of cellulose to C-6 alcohols with high yields, and the Cu salts and mineral acids were completely recycled by simple filtration. This approach provides a rationale for designing recyclable mineral acids with wide applications, contributing to the development of green chemical processes.

Production of bio-ethanol by consecutive hydrogenolysis of corn-stalk cellulose

Dawang Chu et al.

Summary: This study developed a consecutive aqueous hydrogenolysis process to convert corn-stalk cellulose into a relatively high concentration of bio-ethanol, demonstrating good efficiency and economic viability. The multi-functional catalytic process provides an economically competitive route for the production of cellulosic ethanol from raw lignocellulose.
