Effect of Noninvasive Respiratory Strategies on Intubation or Mortality Among Patients With Acute Hypoxemic Respiratory Failure and COVID-19 The RECOVERY-RS Randomized Clinical Trial

Gavin D. Perkins et al.

Summary: Among patients with acute hypoxemic respiratory failure due to COVID-19, an initial strategy of CPAP significantly reduced the risk of tracheal intubation or mortality compared with conventional oxygen therapy, but there was no significant difference between an initial strategy of HFNO compared with conventional oxygen therapy. The study may have been underpowered for the comparison of HFNO vs conventional oxygen therapy, and early study termination and crossover among the groups should be considered when interpreting the findings.

Hospital characteristics associated with COVID-19 mortality: data from the multicenter cohort Brazilian Registry

Maira Viana Rego Souza-Silva et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the impact of socioeconomic, hospital, and ICU characteristics on in-hospital mortality in COVID-19 patients admitted to Brazilian institutions. The findings indicated that hospitals with private funding and located in high GDP areas had lower mortality rates, while hospitals with more experienced ICU teams showed reduced mortality.

Clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 in Brazil: Results from the Brazilian COVID-19 registry

Milena S. Marcolino et al.

Summary: This study investigated the characteristics and outcomes of COVID-19 patients hospitalized in Brazilian hospitals. It found that certain parameters at hospital admission, such as age, chronic diseases, laboratory indicators, and treatment methods, were independently associated with a higher risk of in-hospital mortality. The study also highlighted the potential overuse of antimicrobials in COVID-19 patients.

Mortality-related risk factors of COVID-19: a systematic review and meta-analysis of 42 studies and 423,117 patients

Zelalem G. Dessie et al.

Summary: Chronic comorbidities, complications, and demographic factors such as acute kidney injury, COPD, diabetes, hypertension, CVD, cancer, increased D-dimer, male gender, older age, current smoker, and obesity are identified as clinical risk factors for fatal outcomes related to coronavirus mortality, according to large dataset from 42 studies involving 423,117 patients. The findings provide valuable insights for future research, control, and prevention of the disease.

The impact of first and second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in society: comparative analysis to support control measures to cope with negative effects of future infectious diseases

Mario Coccia

Summary: This study conducted a comparative analysis of the first and second waves of COVID-19 in Italy, finding that the first wave had a high and prolonged negative impact on health, while the second wave saw an increase in confirmed cases but lower levels of ICU admissions and deaths compared to the first wave. Lessons learned from this analysis can be applied to similar areas to support effective policy responses to future waves of COVID-19 and similar infectious diseases.

Effect of timing of intubation on clinical outcomes of critically ill patients with COVID-19: a systematic review and meta-analysis of non-randomized cohort studies

Eleni Papoutsi et al.

Summary: This study suggests that the timing of intubation may not affect the mortality and morbidity of critically ill patients with COVID-19, supporting a wait-and-see approach which might lead to fewer intubations. Relevant guidelines may therefore need to be updated.

Clinical characteristics and outcomes of COVID-19 patients admitted to the intensive care unit during the first year of the pandemic in Brazil: a single center retrospective cohort study

Thiago Domingos Correa et al.

Summary: This study described the clinical characteristics, outcomes, and predictors of in-hospital mortality of COVID-19 patients admitted to the intensive care unit in a private hospital in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The findings showed that older age, higher disease severity, and comorbidities were associated with increased risk of inhospital mortality among COVID-19 patients in the ICU.
