Summary: Among patients with acute hypoxemic respiratory failure due to COVID-19, an initial strategy of CPAP significantly reduced the risk of tracheal intubation or mortality compared with conventional oxygen therapy, but there was no significant difference between an initial strategy of HFNO compared with conventional oxygen therapy. The study may have been underpowered for the comparison of HFNO vs conventional oxygen therapy, and early study termination and crossover among the groups should be considered when interpreting the findings.

The impact of first and second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in society: comparative analysis to support control measures to cope with negative effects of future infectious diseases

Summary: This study conducted a comparative analysis of the first and second waves of COVID-19 in Italy, finding that the first wave had a high and prolonged negative impact on health, while the second wave saw an increase in confirmed cases but lower levels of ICU admissions and deaths compared to the first wave. Lessons learned from this analysis can be applied to similar areas to support effective policy responses to future waves of COVID-19 and similar infectious diseases.
