A systematic evaluation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in South Atlantic subtropical mangrove wetlands under a coastal zone development scenario

Marina Reback Garcia et al.

Summary: Worldwide mangrove forests are threatened by hydrophobic contaminants like PAHs, with ecosystems like the Paranagu'a Estuarine System in South Brazil facing imminent risks due to factors like oil spills during port operations. Initial assessments of PAHs in the mangrove sediments of the PES are underway, highlighting the urgent need for environmental protection measures.

Baseline distributions and sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in reef-associated sediments of Vembar group of Islands, Gulf of Mannar, India

D. Pradhap et al.

Summary: The study investigated the source and concentration of PAH fractions in the reef sediments of the Vembar group of Islands, Gulf of Mannar, India. The concentration of PAHs ranged from 0.36 to 15.98 ng/g, with low-molecular-weight fractions being the main contaminant. The accumulation of LMWPAH fraction was low, while HMW fraction was derived from pyrolytic sources.

Toxicity and Risks Assessment of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in River Bed Sediments of an Artisanal Crude Oil Refining Area in the Niger Delta, Nigeria

Ibigoni C. Howard et al.

Summary: The study conducted in mangrove river bed sediments in the Niger Delta of Nigeria analyzed the concentration, occurrence, distribution, toxicity, and health risks of PAHs. It was found that the area is heavily contaminated with PAHs, mainly contributed by biomass combustion, fossil fuel, and pyrogenic sources. The high molecular weight PAHs were dominant over the low molecular weight ones, indicating high toxicity potency.

Investigating the origin and tissue concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in seafood and health risk in Niger Delta, Nigeria

Udeme Sunday Udofia et al.

Summary: The study investigated the origin, tissue concentration, and health risk of PAHs contaminants in three economically important species of seafood from the crude oil-impacted Niger Delta region. Different tissue concentrations of PAHs residues at low, moderate, and chronic levels were revealed, indicating a potential health risk, especially for residents who consume a large quantity of seafood. The mathematical evaluation suggested a pyrogenic origin of PAHs in all the investigated seafood species.
