Metabolic determination of cell fate through selective inheritance of mitochondria

Julia Dohla et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that selectively and asymmetrically inherited mitochondria in mammary stem-like cells impose a metabolic bias on progeny, affecting the balance between self-renewal and differentiation. This metabolic feature, established by functionally distinct mitochondrial age-classes, acts as a fate determinant in asymmetric division of epithelial stem-like cells.Cells that inherit old mitochondria with oxidative energy metabolism promote differentiation, while cells inheriting newly synthesized mitochondria with low levels of Rieske iron-sulfur polypeptide 1 maintain stemness through the pentose phosphate pathway during early fate determination.

A saturated map of common genetic variants associated with human height

Loic Yengo et al.

Summary: A large genome-wide association study of more than 5 million individuals reveals that 12,111 independent SNPs account for nearly all the heritability of height attributable to common genetic variants. These SNPs are clustered within non-overlapping genomic segments and the phenotypic variance explained varies across populations.

Early-life vitamin B12 orchestrates lipid peroxidation to ensure reproductive success via SBP-1/SREBP1 in Caenorhabditis elegans

Shenlu Qin et al.

Summary: This study establishes a Caenorhabditis elegans model to investigate the impact of early-life Vitamin B12 deficiency on adult health. The results show that early-life B12 deficiency increases lipogenesis and lipid peroxidation in adult worms, leading to germline defects through ferroptosis. The study identifies the methionine cycle-SBP-1/SREBP1-lipogenesis axis as a central mechanism in programming adult traits by early-life B12.

Mitochondria as Signaling Organelles Control Mammalian Stem Cell Fate

Ram Prosad Chakrabarty et al.

Summary: Mitochondrial metabolism plays a crucial role in determining stem cell fate and function, beyond its traditional roles in ATP production and support for stem cell survival and growth. This review focuses on key conceptual ideas regarding how mitochondria control mammalian stem cell fate and function through mechanisms such as reactive oxygen species generation and TCA cycle metabolite production.
