High-Performance Cycling of Na Metal Anodes in Phosphonium and Pyrrolidinium Fluoro(sulfonyl)imide Based Ionic Liquid Electrolytes

Shammi A. Ferdousi et al.

Summary: We investigated the sodium electrochemistry and the evolution and chemistry of the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) during cycling of Na metal electrodes in two ionic liquid (IL) electrolytes. We found that the IL based on the phosphonium cation demonstrated superior performance and stability compared to the pyrrolidinium-based counterpart, even after the addition of water. This research breakthrough shows promise for the development of high-capacity Na metal anodes and future higher-temperature Na-metal-based batteries.

Comparative X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy Study of the SEI and CEI in Three Different Lithium Ion Cell Formats

Bastian Heidrich et al.

Summary: This study compares the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) of three lithium ion cell formats and explores the influence of water content on cell performance and impedance, as well as the contribution of organic species to negative electrode passivation when the conducting salt hydrolysis is low. Additionally, the presence of atmospheric gases during formation is found to result in thicker SEI and CEI for coin cells, regardless of whether the cells are dried.

Inhibiting Dendrite Growth via Regulating the Electrified Interface for Fast-Charging Lithium Metal Anode

Xinyang Wang et al.

Summary: In Extreme Fast Charging (XFC), it has been found that adaptively enhanced internal electric field in a constant voltage charging mode can facilitate Li+ migration towards the negatively charged lithium electrode, mitigating Li+ depletion at the interface and suppressing dendrites. Furthermore, more NO3- ions are involved in the solvation sheath, leading to nitride-enriched solid electrolyte interphase and favoring lower barriers for Li+ transport.

Tuning the Formation and Structure of the Silicon Electrode/Ionic Liquid Electrolyte Interphase in Superconcentrated Ionic Liquids

Khryslyn Arano et al.

Summary: The study revealed the important influence of the nature of ion liquid cation and salt concentration on the interfacial structure and solid electrolyte interface (SEI) formation. The IL cation nature and increased Li salt concentration can effectively control the formation of SEI and impact the reversibility of the lithium-silicon alloying process. The findings indicate a clear connection between the nanostructure of IL electrolyte, SEI formation, and the cycling performance of Si-based batteries.
