Effects of in vitro simulated digestion and fecal fermentation of polysaccharides from straw mushroom (Volvariella volvacea) on its physicochemical properties and human gut microbiota

Wei Hu et al.

Summary: In this study, the fermentation and digestion behavior of Volvariella volvacea polysaccharide (VVP) were investigated through in vitro simulation experiment. The results showed that VVP was resistant to digestion by saliva-gastrointestinal, but underwent significant degradation during fecal fermentation. The degradation of VVP led to changes in its molecular weight, monosaccharide composition, and the proportion of beneficial and unfavorable bacteria in the intestinal microbial environment.

Antioxidant Activity of Polysaccharides from the Edible Mushroom Pleurotus eryngii

Tania Petraglia et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the antioxidant and neuroprotective activity of an enriched polysaccharide fraction (EPF) obtained from the fruiting body of cultivated P. eryngii. The EPF showed high content of (1-3; 1-6)-beta-D-glucans and exhibited significant scavenging activities against DPPH, superoxide, hydroxyl, and nitric oxide radicals. It also demonstrated biocompatibility and reduced oxidative stress in DI-TNC1 cells. These findings suggest that polysaccharides extracted from P. eryngii could be used as functional food to enhance antioxidant defenses.

Structure elucidation, immunomodulatory activity, antitumor activity and its molecular mechanism of a novel polysaccharide from Boletus reticulatus Schaeff

Siyuan Su et al.

Summary: A new water-soluble heteropolysaccharide (BRS-X) with a molecular weight of 15 kDa was isolated from the fruiting bodies of Boletus reticulatus Schaeff. BRS-X exhibited strong proliferative activity in T cells and B cells, and promoted the secretion of immunoglobulins. It also facilitated cell proliferation and phagocytosis, and significantly inhibited tumor growth. Transcriptome sequencing analysis revealed the involvement of MAPK and PI3K/Akt signaling pathways, and a reduction in VEGF and VEGFR expression under the treatment of BRS-X.

Simulated gastrointestinal digestion and gut microbiota fermentation of polysaccharides from Agaricus bisporus

Chujing Fu et al.

Summary: In this study, it was found that Agaricus bisporus polysaccharides (ABP) were not easily digested but could be fermented by gut microbiota to produce short-chain fatty acids. ABP also modulated the composition of gut microbiota, indicating its potential as a prebiotic food component.

Polysaccharides from different cultivars of wolfberry: Physicochemical characteristics and protection against oxidative stress

Han Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the chemical structures and biological activities of polysaccharides from different cultivars of wolfberry. The polysaccharides were found to be neutral protein-bound heteropolysaccharides with varying molecular weight ranges. The major components were galactose, glucose, and arabinose. Differences in chemical properties, monosaccharide composition, and glycosidic bond ratios resulted in variations in thermal properties. LBPN-7 exhibited the strongest antioxidant protection in ARPE-19 cells. The findings contribute to a better understanding of the structural characteristics and bioactivities of wolfberry polysaccharides.

Structural Characterization and In Vitro Fermentation Characteristics of Enzymatically Extracted Black Mulberry Polysaccharides

Jian Ai et al.

Summary: In this study, the structural characterization and in vitro fermentation patterns of crude black mulberry fruit polysaccharides (BMPs) were investigated systematically. Enzymatic treatment improved the polysaccharide yield and led to different chemical composition and structure. BMPs showed different degrees of fermentability and influenced the growth of gut microbiota, stimulating the growth of beneficial bacteria and inhibiting the growth of harmful bacteria.

Gut microbiota-bile acid crosstalk contributes to the rebound weight gain after calorie restriction in mice

Mengci Li et al.

Summary: This study found that caloric restriction reduces the abundance of Parabacteroides distasonis in the gut and alters serum bile acid profile, which contributes to weight regain. Treatment with Parabacteroides distasonis or non-12 alpha-hydroxylated bile acids can ameliorate weight regain through increased thermogenesis.
