Physical literacy in Europe: The current state of implementation in research, practice, and policy

Johannes Carl et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively assessed and compared the implementation of physical literacy (PL) in research, policy, and practice across Europe. The analysis revealed heterogeneity in PL situations in different countries, but also identified similarities. The research suggests that academic activities should be intensified to further develop conceptual and linguistic aspects of PL and promote its integration into practical and political spheres.

Development of ELIP to Assess Physical Literacy for Emerging Adults: A Methodological and Epistemological Challenge

J. Gandrieau et al.

Summary: This study aims to develop appropriate tools for assessing physical literacy (PL) and address the current issues in PL assessment. The evaluation de la Litteratie Physique (ELIP) was developed through a Delphi method and cognitive interviews, highlighting four dimensions (physical, affective, cognitive, and social) to be assessed. However, further research is needed to determine the validity, reliability, and sensitivity of ELIP.

Differences in perceived physical literacy between teachers delivering physical education in schools: classroom teachers vs physical education teachers

Gunay Yildizer et al.

Summary: The study investigated the differences in physical literacy (PL) between physical education (PE) and classroom teachers based on their experience level and gender. Results showed that PE teachers had higher PL scores than classroom teachers, and teachers with 16-20 years of experience had lower scores in self-confidence and communication. This highlights the importance of improving teacher training programs to enhance both PL comprehension and PE quality.

Yan Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the associations among three indicators (physical competence, physical well-being, and perceived physical literacy) among older adults in day care centers in Hong Kong. The results showed positive correlations between physical competence and physical well-being, as well as between perceived physical literacy and physical well-being.

Psychometric Validation of Senior Perceived Physical Literacy Instrument

Chien-Yu Liu et al.

Summary: This study validated the Senior Perceived Physical Literacy Instrument (SPPLI) for assessing physical literacy among older adults. The SPPLI exhibited proper reliability and validity, and consisted of three components: attitude toward physical activity, physical activity ability, and sociality around physical activity. Educational attainment and stage of exercise significantly affected physical activity ability and the three components.

Exploring the Level of Physical Fitness on Physical Activity and Physical Literacy Among Chinese University Students: A Cross-Sectional Study

Cheng Zhang et al.

Summary: This study found that the physical fitness level among Chinese university students is decreasing, with men performing better in vital capacity, muscular strength, and aerobic fitness. There is a positive correlation between physical literacy and different aspects of physical fitness in both men and women. The results support promoting participation in physical activity among university students and using physical literacy as a tool to enhance physical fitness.

Validation of a Speech Database for Assessing College Students' Physical Competence under the Concept of Physical Literacy

Rui-Si Ma et al.

Summary: This study developed a speech database to assess physical competence, one element of physical literacy. The database collected speech samples from 31 healthy Cantonese speakers in rest and after performing exercises. The study trained a support vector machine (SVM) on acoustic features using two speech feature sets, eGeMAPS and ComParE, for speech signal processing. The results showed that the four-class SVM outperformed the one-class SVM, achieving 70% accuracy in the three-class model. The study also suggested future work on predicting physical competence, comparing speech features across age groups, and conducting spectral analysis.

Self-reported measurements of physical literacy in adults: a scoping review

Knud Ryom et al.

Summary: This scoping review aimed to assess existing self-reported instruments measuring different elements of the domains of physical literacy (PL). The review found various validated instruments for assessing the affective and physical domains of PL, but few instruments for measuring the cognitive domain. The review also identified a gap in the research regarding the measurement of the inter-relatedness of the three domains.

Physical Literacy Assessment Tools: A Systematic Literature Review for Why, What, Who, and How

Habyarimana Jean de Dieu et al.

Summary: This study reviewed the current landscape of physical literacy assessment tools, finding that the majority focus on fundamental movement skills, athlete development, or health and well-being, rather than lifelong participation in physical activity. It also discovered that only a small percentage of tools address all three domains of physical literacy, with the International Physical Literacy Association's matrix being the only one that considers individuals of all age groups. Additionally, most tools were found to prioritize assessment for learning or a combination of assessment for learning and assessment as learning while evaluating individuals' progress in physical literacy.

Summary: This research aimed to examine the effects of sport education on university students' physical literacy and physical activity levels. The results showed that sport education led to increases in physical literacy in the affective and social domains, as well as greater daily physical activity levels and reduced perceived disempowering motivational climate in the follow-up phase. Sport education was found to be beneficial in developing the behavioral domain of undergraduate student physical literacy.
