A Review of the Impact of Sun Safety Interventions in Children

Imran T. Baig et al.

Summary: In the United States, melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers are the most common types of cancer diagnosed each year. Early adoption of proper preventative behaviors can significantly reduce the prevalence of skin cancer. This study aimed to assess the impact of various informational, economic, and environmental interventions on sun-protective behaviors, knowledge, attitudes, and sun exposure in children, based on previous research studies.

Indoor Versus Outdoor: Does Occupational Sunlight Exposure Increase Melanoma Risk? A Systematic Review

Richard C. Maduka et al.

Summary: This article critically evaluates the relationship between chronic occupational exposure to sunlight and the risk of developing cutaneous melanoma. A total of 14 articles were analyzed, and results showed no difference in the likelihood of developing melanoma between outdoor and indoor occupation groups. Further research is needed to identify other occupational or lifestyle-related risk factors and improve early detection of melanoma.

Trends in keratinocyte skin cancer incidence, mortality and burden of disease in 33 countries between 1990 and 2017

Dorothy D. Yang et al.

Summary: This study examined the trends in incidence, mortality, and DALYs of basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) and cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs). The results showed that while the incidence of SCC has increased in most countries, there has been a decrease in mortality rates. This highlights the importance of addressing this global health issue.

Summary: The American Cancer Society predicts that there will be 1,958,310 new cancer cases and 609,820 cancer deaths in the United States in 2023. While incidence trends for most cancers are favorable, prostate cancer saw a significant increase of 3% annually from 2014 to 2019. However, the overall cancer death rate continues to decline due to advances in treatment, with a 33% reduction since 1991.

Sun-protective behaviors and sunburn among US adults

Costner McKenzie et al.

Summary: Individuals can reduce the risk of skin cancer by minimizing UV sunlight exposure, and recent trends in sun-protective behaviors were investigated. The study analyzed data from the National Health Interview Survey conducted in 2010, 2015, and 2020, and found that US adults had increased the prevalence of sun-protective behaviors and decreased sun avoidance over time. However, disparities in sun-protective behaviors exist among different demographic groups.

What can Aotearoa New Zealand learn from the Australian Sunsmart Story? A qualitative study

Bronwen M. McNoe et al.

Summary: By conducting in-depth interviews with stakeholders in Australia, successful strategies for skin cancer primary prevention were identified, which could be translated to other jurisdictions. These strategies include the use of scientific evidence, strong leadership, legislation and strategic documents, media engagement with personal stories, and garnering public support. However, barriers such as lack of funding, variation by state, apathy, and long latency of skin cancer were also identified.

Population-Based Study Detailing Cutaneous Melanoma Incidence and Mortality Trends in Canada

Santina Conte et al.

Summary: This population-based study reveals that while the incidence of melanoma is increasing in Canada, mortality rates have decreased since 2013. We provide detailed distribution of this cancer across regions, highlighting communities in southern and coastal areas as most at risk, as well as the latest trends in melanoma incidence by age, sex, and anatomical site. Males tend to have more melanoma on the head and trunk, while females tend to have more melanoma on the extremities. Acral Lentiginous Melanoma is the only subtype more common in females, primarily affecting the hands and feet.
