Thant Zin Tun et al.

Summary: The study revealed a high prevalence of microplastics in soils from open-dumping sites in Asian countries, primarily originating from everyday plastic products such as polyethylene and polypropylene. Furthermore, phthalates and antioxidants found in the floating fraction accounted for a significant proportion of the total additives in soils, indicating that approximately half of the additives in dumping site soils were derived from microplastics.

Soil health and microplastics: a review of the impacts of microplastic contamination on soil properties

Rogers Wainkwa Chia et al.

Summary: The presence of microplastics in soil is increasing globally. However, the effects of soil microplastic contamination on soil health indicators vary. It can either increase or decrease the trend of physicochemical and biological soil properties, and in some cases, it has no impact. The alteration of soil health properties by microplastics is influenced by factors such as microplastic concentrations, types, soil mechanics, and microorganisms.

Detection of microplastics in human lung tissue using μFTIR spectroscopy

Lauren C. Jenner et al.

Summary: Airborne microplastics (MPs) have been found to have increased concentrations in areas with high human population and activity, especially indoors. This study analyzed human lung tissue samples and identified 39 MPs in 11 out of 13 samples, with an average concentration of 1.42 +/- 1.50 MP/g of tissue. The most abundant polymer types were polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate, and resin. The study also found that MPs were present in all regions of the lung, with significantly higher levels in the lower region compared to the upper and middle regions. These findings suggest that inhalation is a route of exposure for environmental MPs.

First evidence of microplastics in Antarctic snow

Alex R. Aves et al.

Summary: Airborne microplastics have been identified in various remote environments, but there is a lack of data in the Southern Hemisphere, particularly in Antarctica. This study collected snow samples from 19 sites in the Ross Island region of Antarctica and confirmed the presence of microplastics using micro-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (mu FTIR). The results showed that all Antarctic snow samples contained microplastics, with an average concentration of 29 particles L-1. The most common type of microplastic was fibers, and the most common polymer was polyethylene terephthalate (PET). The study also found that the microplastics could have been transported over long distances of up to 6000 km and could have local sources from nearby research stations.
