The effects and safety of telerehabilitation in patients with lower-limb joint replacement: A systematic review and narrative synthesis

Miia M. Jansson et al.

Summary: This systematic review examines the effects and safety of telerehabilitation in patients with lower-limb joint replacement. The results suggest that completing telerehabilitation provides similar improvements in physical functioning compared to conventional in-person outpatient physical therapy, without an increase in adverse events or resource utilization. However, the effect of telerehabilitation on physical functioning is assessed as heterogeneous and of moderate to low-quality evidence.

A scoping review of feasibility, cost, access to rehabilitation services and implementation of telerehabilitation: Implications for low- and middle-income countries

Eugene Nizeyimana et al.

Summary: This study aimed to examine the feasibility, cost, access, and implementation processes of telerehabilitation (TR) in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and high-income countries (HICs). The analysis of 29 included studies found that TR was feasible and cost-saving, and it improved access to rehabilitation services in both LMICs and HICs. Asynchronous methods using mobile apps were the most common mode of TR delivery. Barriers and facilitators were identified in terms of various factors, such as human, organizational, technical, and clinical practice related factors.

Effectiveness of Telerehabilitation in Physical Therapy: A Rapid Overview

Pamela Seron et al.

Summary: Despite contradictory results, telerehabilitation in physical therapy shows promise in improving conditions such as osteoarthritis, low-back pain, hip and knee replacement, and multiple sclerosis, as well as in cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation settings. Further high-quality clinical trials and systematic reviews are needed to provide clearer evidence for professionals to make informed decisions. This will ultimately lead to better clinical outcomes for patients, both during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond.

Summary: The health emergency in Spain due to COVID-19 led to a state of alarm for over three months, affecting a vast number of people. Measures such as reducing in-person visits to healthcare facilities and increasing virtual consultations were taken to mitigate the risk of contagion. After the pandemic, the consideration of telemedicine as a new way of practicing medicine will be necessary, given its lack of regulations and loopholes that may cause insecurity among physicians.
