Polyhydroxyalkanoates: a review of microbial production and technology application

A. A. Alves et al.

Summary: Plastics from petrochemical sources are difficult to degrade and have negative environmental impacts. Researchers worldwide are focusing on developing new biotechnological strategies for the production of bioplastics, which are economically viable and biodegradable materials with various potential applications. Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) are biopolymers with similar properties to commonly used plastics. PHAs can be biosynthesized by microorganisms and accumulate intracellularly. However, the high cost of PHA production and the expense of carbon sources are challenges for large-scale production. This review discusses factors associated with PHA production, including attempts to use low-cost substrates and different fermentation strategies.
