Potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in coastal sediments of Bandar Abbas city, North of Persian Gulf: An ecological risk assessment

Trias Mahmudiono et al.

Summary: The concentration of potentially toxic elements (PTEs; Pb, Ni, and Cd) in coastal sediment samples from Bandar Abbas city, Iran was measured using flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). The potential ecological risk index (RI) was calculated to estimate the environmental health risk. The ranking of PTEs was Pb > Ni > Cd, and the RI values for sampling points A to E indicated a moderate risk level. Therefore, it is recommended to implement control programs to reduce the PTEs in the Persian Gulf coastal sediment.

Impact of watershed habitat quality based on land use: a case study of taking Ciyao River Basin

Hui Xiao-Mei et al.

Summary: Land use pattern greatly impacts habitat quality, and this study focuses on the Ciyao River Basin. By analyzing land use data through ArcGIS, the researchers identified major threat sources and calculated their impact on water quality. The study also analyzed habitat changes and their influence on hydrological and water quality. The findings showed changes in land types, with habitat quality decreasing from north to south in the basin. However, improvements were observed in the headwater area, leading to an increase in water resources and water quality in the Ciyao River.

Potential health risk assessment of metals in the muscle of seven wild fish species from the Wujiangdu reservoir, China

Shenwen Cai et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the concentrations of Cu, Zn, Fe, Mn, Pb, Cd, As, and Hg in the water and muscle of various fish species from the Wujiangdu reservoir, China. Metal concentrations in water were within acceptable limits, while the highest concentrations in fish muscle were observed for Zn and Fe. Omnivorous and carnivorous fish had higher metal concentrations compared to herbivorous fish. The bioconcentration factor of Hg was significantly higher than that of other metals. Although noncarcinogenic risk was low for fishermen and the general population, the carcinogenic risk associated with fish consumption should not be ignored.

Analysis of hydrochemical characteristics and genesis of water-deficient rivers in China: a case study of the Ciyao River Basin in Shanxi Province

Hui Xiao-Mei et al.

Summary: This study took the Ciyao River basin in Shanxi Province as a case study to explore the chemical water characteristics of water-scarce rivers in China. Water samples were collected from the mainstream and tributaries in the wet, normal, and dry seasons of 2021. Ion chromatography (IC) instrument was used to analyze the composition and spatial variation of the main ions in the water body. Pearson correlation analyses were conducted to evaluate the relevant correlation between ion concentrations. The research results can provide technical references and a basis for regional water environment protection, water resources development and utilization, and watershed eco-hydrology research.

Simultaneous Analysis of Mycotoxins, Potentially Toxic Elements, and Pesticides in Rice: A Health Risk Assessment Study

Mohammad Hashem Yousefi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the contamination of rice with potentially toxic elements, mycotoxins, and pesticides in samples imported from Pakistan, India, Thailand, and domestic Iranian rice. The results showed that Iranian rice did not exceed the national standard limits for toxic elements, while imported rice had at least one toxic element above the permissible level. The levels of mycotoxins were within the allowable range in all rice types. Thai rice was the only group without pesticide residues. The health risk index was lowest for Iranian rice and highest for Pakistani rice.

Summary: In this study, it was found that organic selenium can inhibit the absorption of arsenic in radish more effectively than inorganic selenium. Additionally, the application of organic selenium and low concentration of selenite enhances the stress resistance of radish, while high concentration of selenite and selenate have stress and toxic effects on radish.

Summary: Intense anthropogenic activities have led to deterioration of groundwater quality worldwide. Scientific assessments of groundwater quality and human health risks are crucial. This study comprehensively assessed the groundwater quality and potential risks of As, F-, NO3-N, and Cr6+ in the Guanzhong Basin. Results showed spatial variability in groundwater composition and identified Cr6+, As, NO3-N, and F- as the main contaminants. The study also highlighted the high risks faced by residents in the north of the basin and the importance of considering the geological background and irrigation activities.

Comparison of the health risks associated with exposure to toxic metals and metalloids following consumption of freshwater catches in China

Cuirong Luo et al.

Summary: The enrichment of toxic elements in crayfish, carp, and crab poses a threat to consumer's health. The concentrations of these elements in hepatopancreas/liver were higher than in muscle, except for Cr in crayfish. Cd concentrations in the hepatopancreas of crayfish and crab exceeded the standards. The estimated daily intake of these elements in the muscle did not exceed the tolerable limits, but the cumulative consumption could increase health risks.
