Relying on the non-radical degradation of oxytetracycline by peroxymonosulfate activated with a magnetic Cu/Fe composite: performance and mechanism

Jiabao Sun et al.

Summary: In this study, magnetic nano-Cu/Fe composites were synthesized and used as an activator of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade oxytetracycline (OTC). The Cu/Fe-1 catalyst showed excellent degradation effects on OTC. The presence of CuFe2O4 composites in Cu/Fe-1 was found to promote the production of O-1(2) and improve the OTC degradation efficiency.

Microwave photo-oxidation with diverse oxidants for Congo red degradation: effect of oxidants, degradation pathway and economic analysis

Neha Shukla et al.

Summary: This study investigated the degradation of Congo red (CR) using the microwave photo-oxidation (MWPO) process with persulphate (PS) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as oxidants. Results showed high CR degradation efficiency and COD removal rates, but excessive oxidant and CR concentrations reduced the efficiency. The degradation of CR followed pseudo-first-order kinetics, involving cleavage of benzene-benzene bond and hydroxylation as the main mechanisms.

Efficient moxifloxacin degradation by CoFe2O4 magnetic nanoparticles activated peroxymonosulfate: Kinetics, pathways and mechanisms

Lili Liu et al.

Summary: CoFe2O4 magnetic nanoparticles were used as heterogeneous catalysts to activate PMS for efficient removal of MOX. The degradation of MOX followed a pseudo-first order kinetic reaction equation, with SO4•- playing a dominant role in the degradation process. Five probable degradation pathways of MOX were proposed based on identified intermediates, and the presence of certain ions had negative effects on MOX removal efficiency.

Heterogeneous activation of persulfate by carbon nanofiber supported Fe3O4@carbon composites for efficient ibuprofen degradation

Yang Zhang et al.

Summary: Heterogeneous catalysts for persulfate activation were synthesized using a one-pot hydrothermal method with ferrocene and carbon nanofiber as precursors. The catalysts exhibited high catalytic performances for ibuprofen degradation, with stable activity and minimal metal leaking over multiple cycles. Hydroxyl and sulfate radicals were identified as the main contributors to ibuprofen degradation, with the possible pathways elucidated through intermediate analysis.

Haocheng Song et al.

Summary: Antibiotic contamination is a serious environmental concern, and sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes have shown potential for treatment. A magnetic biochar derived from loofah was used to activate persulfate for cephalexin degradation, with the C-OH of the catalyst playing a crucial role. The conversion between Fe3+ and Fe2+ enhanced the degradation by producing SO4 center dot-, indicating broad adaptability and applications of the catalyst.

Products distribution and contribution of (de)chlorination, hydroxylation and coupling reactions to 2,4-dichlorophenol removal in seven oxidation systems

Xiaoxue Pan et al.

Summary: The transformation behavior of 2,4-dichlorophenol (24-DCP) was studied in seven different reaction systems, showing that complete removal of 24-DCP can be achieved in minutes in Fe(VI), KMnO4, NaClO, Fenton, and O-3 systems. LC-MS analysis identified 41 products, primarily hydroxyl substitution and coupling reactions. High chlorination was observed in the NaClO system, while coupling products accounted for about 45% of the removed 24-DCP under PS oxidation.
