Selection bias in follow-up studies of stem cell transplantation survivors: an experience within the Maastricht Observational study of late effects after Stem cell trAnsplantation (MOSA)

Summary: Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is an important treatment for various diseases, but the long-term effects on survivors are not fully understood. A survey conducted as part of a larger study on stem cell transplantation survivors revealed that the participants had a relatively better quality of life and health compared to the non-participating group. Moreover, there were more deaths in the non-participating group. This suggests a potential selection bias in long-term follow-up studies, which could underestimate the negative effects of treatments.

Self-perceived cognitive functioning and quality of life among cancer survivors: results from the PROFILES registry

Summary: A study investigated the level of self-perceived cognitive functioning and associated factors among a large population-based cohort of cancer survivors and matched controls. The results showed that impaired self-perceived cognitive functioning is prevalent among a wide range of cancer survivors, especially in younger survivors. Survivors with lower emotional functioning and more fatigue were more likely to report impaired self-perceived cognitive functioning.

Hematopoietic cell transplantation and cellular therapy survey of the EBMT: monitoring of activities and trends over 30 years

Summary: The number of Hematopoietic Cell Transplantations in Europe and collaborating countries has been on the rise, with a total of 48,512 HCT reported in 43,581 patients during 2019. The main indications were myeloid malignancies, lymphoid malignancies, and nonmalignant disorders. CAR-T cellular therapies also showed significant growth from 2017 to 2019. Over the past 30 years, there has been a substantial increase in the number of centers and countries performing HCT procedures, with more than 800,000 transplants reported overall.
