ZnO Nanorods with Doubly Positive Oxygen Vacancies for Efficient Xylene Sensing

Hui Yang et al.

Summary: ZnO nanomaterials have been widely used for gas sensors due to their structural flexibility, earth abundance, and environmental friendliness. This study found that ZnO nanorods with a high amount of doubly positively charged oxygen vacancies showed superior gas sensitivity towards xylene, while Ga doping reduced the number of these vacancies and resulted in worse sensing performance. Therefore, doubly positively charged oxygen vacancies play a crucial role in the gas sensing performance of metal-oxide semiconductors.

The role of the surface acidic/basic centers and redox sites on TiO2 in the photocatalytic CO2 reduction

Laura Collado et al.

Summary: The influence of carbon deposits on CO2 photoreduction productions, the importance of the acid/base character of the surface and reaction medium, and the deactivation pathways of TiO2 by carbonates and peroxo-species are key findings in understanding the CO2 reduction mechanism. Activity can be partially recovered by mild acid washing treatment.

Oxygen Vacancy-Dependent Chemiluminescence: A Facile Approach for Quantifying Oxygen Defects in ZnO

Jing Lei et al.

Summary: Defect engineering is an effective strategy to improve the catalytic activity of metal oxides. This study found that ZnO nanoparticles with oxygen vacancy can trigger a strong chemiluminescence, and the intensity of the chemiluminescence is strongly dependent on the oxygen vacancy of the nanoparticles. The oxygen vacancy-dependent chemiluminescence provides a rapid, low-cost, and easy-to-operate method for quantifying the oxygen defects in ZnO.

ZnO with Controllable Oxygen Vacancies for Photocatalytic Nitrogen Oxide Removal

Reshalaiti Hailili et al.

Summary: Semiconductor-based photocatalysis is a promising method for air purification by removing nitrogen oxide (NO) pollutants. However, the efficiency of photocatalytic treatment is hampered by sluggish carrier separation, catalyst deactivation, and incomplete oxidation. In this study, various ZnO structures with deliberate surface defect constructions were fabricated to address these issues. The results showed that ZnO rich in oxygen vacancies exhibited significantly enhanced NO removal efficiency and fewer toxic byproducts compared to pristine and vacancy-poor ZnO. Furthermore, the surface defects promoted not only carrier separation but also molecular oxygen activation, resulting in the generation of strong oxidant superoxide radicals and improved efficiency. Density functional theory calculations confirmed the successful adsorption and activation of NO and molecular oxygen on the defective surface, further contributing to the enhanced NO conversions.

Visible-Light-Responsive Photocatalytic Activity Significantly Enhanced by Active [VZn+VO+] Defects in Self-Assembled ZnO Nanoparticles

Nilson S. Ferreira et al.

Summary: The study explored the impact of defects on the photoactivity of ZnO nanoparticles prepared with powdered coconut water. Control over crystalline phase and morphology was achieved through adjustment of calcination temperature. ZnO nanoparticles exhibited enhanced photocatalytic activity under low-intensity visible light irradiation, with morphology playing a key role in influencing their performance.

In-situ growth of few-layer graphene on ZnO with intimate interfacial contact for enhanced photocatalytic CO2 reduction activity

Libo Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a composite material was developed by in-situ deposition of few-layer graphene on the surface of ZnO, leading to enhanced photocatalytic CO2 reduction performance. The improvement was attributed to the intimate interfacial contact and Schottky junction between ZnO and graphene, as well as the photothermal effect of graphene and pi-pi conjugation interaction with CO2 molecules. This work not only provides a feasible method for the in-situ growth of graphene, but also presents an efficient photocatalyst for CO2 reduction.
