Organic-inorganic double networks as highly permeable separation membranes with a chiral selector for organic solvents

Marko Milovanovic et al.

Summary: A novel design of separation membranes was achieved by incorporating an inorganic framework (IF) into an organic polymer membrane, resulting in improved stiffness and strength as well as higher solute permeability. The new design was demonstrated using a diffusion based separation membrane composed of copolymerized and cross-linked acrylamide and (R/S)-N-(1-hydroxy-butan-2-yl) acrylamide (PAAm-co-(R/S)-HBA-l-MBAm) with an IF formed through enzyme-induced mineralization (EIM) of calcium phosphate. This composite material exhibited excellent mechanical properties and selective separation potential for small molecules.

Mechanically-robust electrospun nanocomposite fiber membranes for oil and water separation

Marat Nueraji et al.

Summary: Mechanically-robust nanocomposite membranes for oil and water separation were developed through crosslinking chemistry and electro-spinning technique. The dispersed phase materials with high Young's modulus, such as graphene and multiwalled carbon nanotubes, were selected to enhance the stiffness of the membranes. Chemical modification and induced roughness of the dispersed phase materials were critical for achieving superhydrophobicity. Surface analytic tools were used to characterize the membranes, and AFM-based nanoindentation and TGA/DSC techniques were employed for stiffness measurement and confirmation of composition and formation, respectively. These membranes showed excellent oil/water separation and have potential application in water purification and remediation.

Pyrolysis temperature-regulated gas transport and aging properties in 6FDA-DAM polyimide-derived carbon molecular sieve membranes

Guozhen Liu et al.

Summary: Carbon molecular sieve (CMS) membranes derived from 6FDA-DAM polyimide exhibit improved gas separation efficiency with increasing pyrolysis temperature, leading to densification of the pore structure and enhanced size-sieving effect. Membranes pyrolyzed at higher temperatures are more susceptible to physical aging, but pre-aging treatment can improve and stabilize gas separation performance beyond the upper limit of polymeric membranes. The gas permeation behavior of CMS membranes is dominated by diffusion, making tailoring of gas permeation and physical aging a viable approach to tune their gas transport properties.

Hydrophilic/hydrophobic nanofibres intercalated multilayer membrane with hierarchical structure for efficient oil/water separation

Xingzhen Zhang et al.

Summary: Developing a membrane with high permeating flux and high separation efficiency for oil-in-water emulsion purification is challenging due to the trade-off between perm-selectivity. In this study, we designed a nanofibrous membrane with a special hydrophilic/hydrophobic intercalated multilayer structure to efficiently separate oil-in-water emulsions. The multilayer membrane consists of hydrophilic PAN/ZnO nanoneedles composite fibers layers and hydrophobic PVDF-HEP fibers layers, and the vertically grown ZnO nanoneedles connect the whole membrane. The synergistic effect between the size sieving mechanism of the hydrophilic layers and the coalescence mechanism of the hydrophobic layers overcomes the size mismatch and achieves high separation performance.
