Copper(I), Silver(I), and Gold(I) Ethylene Complexes of Fluorinated and Boron-Methylated Bis- and Tris(pyridyl)borate Chelators

Brandon T. Watson et al.

Summary: Bis-and tris-pyridyl borate ligands with pyridyl donor arms, a methylated boron cap, and a fluorine-lined coordination pocket have been synthesized and used in coinage metal chemistry. These ligands allowed for the isolation of group 11 metal-ethylene complexes, with gold complexes showing the largest coordination-induced upfield shifts of the ethylene 13C resonance. Solid-state structures of these complexes revealed the rare K2 coordination mode instead of the typical K3 coordination mode. Computational analyses indicated the favored K2 coordination mode and the strong interaction between gold(I) and ethylene.

Structure and Bonding of Halonium Compounds

Juan D. D. Velasquez et al.

Summary: The geometry, strength, and physical nature of bonding in halonium cationic compounds have been comprehensively studied through a combined structural and computational analysis. The investigation focused on [D......X......D]+ halonium compounds, where D is a Lewis base and X is Cl, Br, or I. Various factors, including different halogen atoms (X) and nitrogen-donor groups (D) attached to an iodonium cation, were analyzed to understand their influence on the symmetry, strength, and nature of the interaction. The interaction arises from an interplay between electrostatic and orbital contributions, with potential applications in halofunctionalization and supramolecular chemistry.

Diberyllocene, a stable compound of Be(I) with a Be-Be bond

Josef T. Boronski et al.

Summary: The complex diberyllocene CpBeBeCp has been studied for five decades but its experimental characterization has not been achieved until now. We have successfully prepared and isolated this compound by reducing beryllocene with a dimeric magnesium(I) complex, and its structure in the solid state was determined using x-ray crystallography. Diberyllocene acts as a reductant in reactions that form beryllium-aluminum and beryllium-zinc bonds. Quantum chemical calculations suggest similarities between the electronic structure of diberyllocene and the simple homodiatomic species diberyllium (Be2).

Inverse Isotope Effects in Single-Crystal to Single-Crystal Reactivity and the Isolation of a Rhodium Cyclooctane Σ-Alkane Complex

Laurence R. Doyle et al.

Summary: The sequential solid/gas single-crystal to single-crystal reaction of [Rh(Cy2P(CH2)3PCy2)(COD)][BArF4] with H2 or D2 was studied using solid-state NMR spectroscopy and solution quenching techniques. The quantification of the reaction was done using a two-step JMAK model, revealing an inverse isotope effect for the second addition of H2 and the possibility of obtaining the structural solution of the alkane complex using D2. The results were supported by periodic DFT calculations.

Observation of a molecular bond between ions and Rydberg atoms

Nicolas Zuber et al.

Summary: Researchers have discovered a new type of molecular ion based on the interaction between the ionic charge and a flipping-induced dipole of a highly excited electron, called Rydberg atom. This molecular ion has a bond length of several micrometres. Using a high-resolution ion microscope, they have measured the vibrational spectrum and spatially resolved the bond length and angular alignment of the molecule. Due to the large bond length, the molecular dynamics are extremely slow.

Fragmentation and transferability in Hirshfeld atom refinement

Michal Chodkiewicz et al.

Summary: Hirshfeld atom refinement (HAR) is an effective method for obtaining accurate structural parameters for hydrogen atoms. However, it is computationally expensive. This study explores a fragmentation approach as a solution to this problem, significantly improving computation time for larger organic and metal-organic systems with minor differences in calculated structural parameters. Fragmentation also provides a solution for polymeric and disordered systems when applying HAR. The concept of fragmentation is related to the transferable aspherical atom model (TAAM), providing insight into improving TAAM. Hybrid approaches combining fragmentation and atomic density transfer were tested. An efficient handling of intermolecular interactions was introduced. The fragHAR approach improved efficiency in calculations. The study highlights the importance of load-balancing for lowering computational time.

Tetramethylammonium Cation: Directionality and Covalency in Its Interactions with Halide Ions

Diego M. Gil et al.

Summary: This article investigates the degree of interpenetration of van der Waals crusts to better quantify nonbonding contact distances between atoms. The study focuses on the structural trends of intermolecular contacts between tetramethylammonium cation (TMA) and halogen atoms. Computational analysis of model X⋅⋅⋅TMA ion pairs (X = F, Cl, Br, I, Au) reveals two energy minima, with anions interacting simultaneously with three hydrogen atoms. The results demonstrate significant variation in charge distribution around different atoms and its dependence on the distance to the central N atom.

Introducing the Perfluorinated Cp Ligand into Coordination Chemistry

Robin Sievers et al.

Summary: This study successfully synthesized the fluorocarbon-soluble complex [Rh(COD)(C-5(CF3)(5))] through salt metathesis, demonstrating for the first time the coordination ability of the weakly basic [C-5(CF3)(5)](-) ligand. The byproduct [Rh(COD)(C-5(CF3)(4)H)] was also isolated and characterized. DFT studies showed that the interaction energy between the [C-5(CF3)(5)](-) ligand and the 12-electron fragment [Rh(COD)](+) is significantly lower compared to [C-5(CH3)(5)](-), indicating reduced electrostatic interactions and weaker pi-donor properties of the [C-5(CF3)(5)](-) ligand.

Three-Electron Nickel(I)/Nickel(0) Half-Bond

Neil A. Dodd et al.

Summary: An (N-heterocyclic carbene)nickel(I) cation precursor reacts with the corresponding nickel(0) complex to form a dinickel(I,0) monocation. The Ni···Ni distance in this cation is 0.93 angstrom shorter than in the analogous dinickel(0) complex. Density functional theory calculations indicate significant electronic localization despite equivalent Ni centers in the solid-state structure. Reactions with CO and NO form mononuclear carbonyl and nitrosyl complexes, while oxidative addition of an aryl bromide results in C-arylation of the carbene ligands.

An electric field-based approach for quantifying effective volumes and radii of chemically affected space

Austin M. Mroz et al.

Summary: Chemical shape and size are crucial in chemistry. The van der Waals method provides quick estimates of size using overlapping spheres, but it may not accurately describe non-spherical and highly polarized systems. To address this, alternative methods based on electron density have been proposed. This study re-evaluates the sizes of atoms and molecules by examining the local electric field they produce, which implicitly considers long-range fields and predicts that cations would occupy more space than neutral species.
