Future Swedish 3D City Models-Specifications, Test Data, and Evaluation

Maria Uggla et al.

Summary: To enable analyses and simulations, there is a need to standardise semantically richer city models and connect them with external data sources. The development of a new Swedish specification for 3D city models, called 3CIM, is described in this study. 3CIM is an extension of the OGC standard CityGML 2.0 and includes linkages to external databases, registers, and operational systems for the semantic part.

Virtual laser scanning with HELIOS plus plus : A novel take on ray tracing-based simulation of topographic full-waveform 3D laser scanning

Lukas Winiwarter et al.

Summary: Topographic laser scanning is a remote sensing method to create detailed 3D point cloud representations of the Earth's surface. This article introduces HELIOS++, an open-source simulation framework implemented in C++ for various types of terrestrial and airborne laser scanning. HELIOS++ provides a flexible solution for balancing physical accuracy and computational complexity, and offers different 3D scene representation models and simulation features.

SIMULATING LIDAR TO CREATE TRAINING DATA FOR MACHINE LEARNING ON 3D POINT CLOUDS

J. Hildebrand et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a system for creating 3D point clouds with semantics information by utilizing 3D models, which can match the characteristics of real-world 3D point clouds in terms of density, occlusion, and scan pattern. It shows the potential to train neural networks for 3D point cloud classification using the data generated by this system.

Change Detection in Urban Point Clouds: An Experimental Comparison with Simulated 3D Datasets

Iris de Gelis et al.

Summary: In the context of rapid urbanization, monitoring the evolution of cities is crucial. This study compared six methods for urban 3D change detection, finding that deep learning methods highly depend on the size of the training set, while conventional machine learning methods exhibit stable results but have low transfer learning capacities.
