Peroxymonosulfate activation by black TiO2 nanotube arrays under solar light: Switching the activation mechanism and enhancing catalytic activity and stability

Han Yi Yoo et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates a method to enhance the catalytic activity of black TiO2 nanotube arrays (black TNAs) and prevent deactivation in peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation by utilizing solar energy. The black TNAs showed improved solar light absorption and electrical conductivity due to abundant oxygen vacancies on their surface, leading to higher phenol degradation rate and total organic carbon (TOC) removal efficiency compared to other TNAs systems. The mechanism switched from a non-radical pathway to a radical-involved pathway under solar light irradiation, improving the degradation and mineralization of organic pollutants.

Elimination of acetaminophen in sodium carbonate-enhanced thermal/peroxymonosulfate process: Performances, influencing factors and mechanism

Hengyu Cai et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) significantly promotes the degradation of acetaminophen through thermal/PMS process. The Na2CO3/thermal/PMS process exhibits faster removal rate and lower formation potential of BrO3- compared to the Na2CO3/thermal/peroxydisulfate process. The increase of Na2CO3 dosage, PMS dosage, and reaction temperature enhances the acetaminophen degradation. The Na2CO3/thermal/PMS process generates multiple reactive species including O-1(2) and various radicals, which contribute to the removal of acetaminophen. The study provides a promising method to enhance the oxidizing ability of thermal/PMS process and promotes its application in water and soil remediation.

Peroxydisulfate Activation and Singlet Oxygen Generation by Oxygen Vacancy for Degradation of Contaminants

Yongguang Bu et al.

Summary: This study presents a mechanism of PDS activation over OV-rich BiOBr samples, where a nonradical mechanism mediated by O-1(2) is utilized for BPA degradation. The surface OVs of BiOBr provide ideal sites for the inclusion of hydroxyl ions, leading to the formation of Bi-III-OH species that act as active sites for PDS activation. This work offers a novel perspective for the activation of peroxides by defective materials without additional energy supply or aqueous transition metal ions.
