Aligned Polyhydroxyalkanoate Blend Electrospun Fibers as Intraluminal Guidance Scaffolds for Peripheral Nerve Repair

Caroline S. Taylor et al.

Summary: The use of nerve guidance conduits (NGCs) is an effective method for treating peripheral nerve injuries. However, NGCs lack the specific guidance cues found in nerve grafts and are not suitable for treating large gap injuries. The use of intraluminal aligned fiber guidance scaffolds has been shown to enhance neuronal cell neurite outgrowth and Schwann cell migration distances.

A three-dimensional in vitro model of the peripheral nervous system

Sunghee Estelle Park et al.

Summary: The study presented an in vitro model of the peripheral nervous system (PNS) by establishing a coculture model of motor neurons (MNs) and Schwann cells (SCs) in a 3D extracellular matrix hydrogel scaffold. The model successfully reproduced myelination process in the PNS and demonstrated the potential to manipulate myelination and demyelination processes in motor neuron diseases.

Bioresorbable and Mechanically Optimized Nerve Guidance Conduit Based on a Naturally Derived Medium Chain Length Polyhydroxyalkanoate and Poly(ε-Caprolactone) Blend

Xabier Mendibil et al.

Summary: A novel blend of natural medium chain length polyhydroxyalkanoate (MCL-PHA) and synthetic aliphatic polyester poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) was developed for nerve regeneration, showing excellent neuroregenerative properties and bioresorption rate in rat sciatic nerve defects. The material exhibited superior outcomes compared to commercially available synthetic Neurolac NGCs in terms of electrophysiological and histological data, as well as the number of recovered animals.

Harnessing Polyhydroxyalkanoates and Pressurized Gyration for Hard and Soft Tissue Engineering

Pooja Basnett et al.

Summary: Organ dysfunction is a major cause of morbidity and mortality, with transplantation being a key cure but facing challenges due to a lack of donor organs. Tissue engineering using biomaterial scaffolds shows promise in promoting cell attachment, proliferation, and differentiation for tissue regeneration in bone, nerve, and cardiovascular applications. The development of scalable scaffolds using polyhydroxyalkanoate fibers presents an exciting opportunity for both hard and soft tissue regeneration.
