Biochar-SO prepared from pea peels by dehydration with sulfuric acid improves the adsorption of Cr6+ from water

Mohamed A. El-Nemr et al.

Summary: A new biochar derived from pea peel residues was investigated as an adsorbent for the removal of Cr6+ ions from aqueous solution. The obtained biochars were characterized, and their adsorption behavior under different conditions was studied. The results showed that the biochar exhibited high adsorption capacity and the adsorption rate followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model.

Current status of biomethane production using aqueous liquid from pyrolysis and hydrothermal liquefaction of sewage sludge and similar biomass

Saba Seyedi et al.

Summary: Pyrolysis and hydrothermal liquefaction are potential technologies for renewable energy production using wastewater sewage sludge and lignocellulosic biomass. However, the organic-rich liquids produced are currently challenging to manage, and may be harmful to the environment. Integrating anaerobic digestion with thermochemical processes can promote a circular economy by recovering resources and reducing environmental pollution.

Removal of phenolics from aqueous pyrolysis condensate by activated biochar

Tahereh Sarchami et al.

Summary: This study investigated the feasibility of using pyrolytic biochar as an adsorbent for the selective removal of phenolics from aqueous pyrolysis condensate (APC). The results showed that activated soft wood (ASW) biochar had the highest efficiency and capacity for removing phenol from water solutions. The adsorption data with ASW biochar were well described by pseudo second-order equation and Freundlich model, making it a promising environmentally friendly adsorbent for phenolics removal.

Production and separation of acetic acid from pyrolysis oil of lignocellulosic biomass: a review

Tahereh Sarchami et al.

Summary: Bio-oil derived from lignocellulosic biomass pyrolysis is a promising precursor for transportation fuels and value-added chemicals, but its high acidity, mainly from volatile acids like acetic acid, requires costly upgrading before direct use as fuel. Extracting acids from bio-oil offers strategies for improved applications and economic value, with acetic acid being a valuable reagent for various commercially important chemicals.

Analysis of the influence of activated biochar properties on methane production from anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge

Marco Chiappero et al.

Summary: Adding activated biochar can enhance methane production in the anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge, with activated biochar from rice husk and sewage sludge showing better performance. The physico-chemical properties of biochar, such as surface area, porosity, and hydrophobicity, play a key role in influencing its effectiveness in anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge.

Improving Carbon Product Yields in Biocarbon Production by Combining Pyrolysis and Anaerobic Digestion

Cornelis van der Wijst et al.

Summary: Utilization of aqueous condensate from traditional charcoal production through anaerobic digestion to produce biomethane is important for achieving good overall carbon balance. Birch and spruce wood subjected to pyrolysis yielded biocarbon carbon yields ranging from 42% to 54%, with carbon recovery yields between 44% and 59% from anaerobic digestion of the aqueous phases. Total carbon recovery of 77.8% to 85.7% was achieved, with primary carbon losses identified.
